According to Myra...
It sort of got lost in the Christmas rush, but I understand that Council passed a new continuing resolution at its December, 2012 meeting. Something about spiritual partners and not spiritual partners in our Outreach ministry. I'm new around here, so could you explain?

Labyrinth Walk

Ash Wednesday, February 13, marks the start of our Lenten season. As you take time to calm and focus yourself, consider walking the labyrinth as a pathway to reflection, prayer, or contemplation in this penitential season

RedeemerCare
Martin Luther once said, "You have Christ in your neighbor. You ought to serve him, for what you do to your neighbor in need you do to the Lord Christ himself."

REDEEMER LENTEN SMALL GROUPS
|
During Lent, Redeemer members will again gather all around Atlanta as small groups in order to meet each other and to discuss a provocative, inspiring book. This year we will read The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith by Timothy Keller. If you have participated in previous small groups before, you know the rewards of getting to know others and sharing your faith. If you have never been part of a Redeemer small group, plan to join a Lenten group. It can change your life. Sign up for a small group in the Sims Atrium. For information, please contact our Minister for Small Groups, Crystal Rowe (crowe@redeemer.org). Sign up today.

MLK Day of Service
January 21, 2013
|
Over 100 people gathered at Redeemer for our 3rd MLK Day of Service. Ten projects were completed for community outreach partners and for the congregation. The following projects are highlights of the day.
|
Rice for Refugees Redeemer volunteers participated in the Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG) "Rice for Refugees" project. Redeemer member and LSG Vice President of Agency Advancement Lorraine Dorough stated that the volunteers packed 3,000 pounds of rice, which completely filled the back of the LSG extended-bed pickup truck, plus the trunks of three cars! "We will be resettling close to 400 people this year, and we expect the rice to provide for our newly-arrived families until sometime during the summer. A very good day for all!"

Genesis Shelter
Genesis Shelter was very moved by, and appreciative of, our $15,000 in fundraising this fall. They have secured a grant that will help them get through 2013 and a likely merger with another local non-profit that works with homeless children and families. For Redeemer's MLK Day of Service, we painted art pieces that represented specific words. These 18 words - such as love, hope, faith, spirit - came from the room names at Genesis. Each family in the corresponding room will receive this art which they can take when they move to a new home. We hope to do this project again next year for the families that will be in those rooms then! If you have questions about Genesis Shelter, contact Redeemer's Outreach Liaison, Kate Elkins, at kelkins20@gmail.com.

At Lutheran Campus Ministry Grace House
Redeemer volunteers deep cleaned the kitchen, bathroom, and refrigerator in anticipation of the new semester. They also rearranged the Al Daly chapel space. Outside, the team moved dirt and rocks to gain two more parking spaces and allow handicapped access.

Draft Blockers
Peggy McKay (right) of Lutheran Volunteer Corps and the Midtown Assistance Center (MAC) accepts "draft blockers" from Vicar Melody. Made during the MLK Day of Service for MAC clients, these colorful blockers will block drafts at the base of doors and will help keep utility costs down. MAC provides emergency assistance to the working poor of Midtown and Downtown Atlanta.

Redeemer member Jonathan Trapp says going into ministry was a thought that had been in the back of his mind, but it took awhile for it to feel like the right time for him to go down that path. "We were attending a different church before," Jonathan says. "One day we were at Redeemer and I had the realization that I was a Lutheran and realized this was my calling." Read More...

Sisters of the Good Shepherd Circle met for their Holiday Celebration and December Meeting.
|
As one of the active WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) circles at Redeemer, the Sisters of the Good Shepherd meet every fourth Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for a potluck dinner in the Reception Room (6:15- to pray the weekly congregational prayer list in the 2nd floor Chapel). Each month the meeting varies from speakers, to bible studies, to service projects. In future newsletters, more Circle information will be shared, but all women at Redeemer are invited to the spring Southeastern Synod WELCA Cluster 3 Meeting, which will be hosted by Redeemer this spring. More information about this meeting will be shared next month.
|
As of January, 2013, Redeemer members had committed to 384 pledges totaling $1,584,688, an important increase from the previous year. Growth in giving has been one of the major goals of the Stewardship Board. This is indeed welcome news for Redeemer's ministries this year. Read More...
