 Dear Myra,

So what happens to our church-and all churches-if they do away with the tax deduction for charitable contributions?

A Goshen Valley Boy Lives a Life of Hope

Hi, my name is Chase Chitwood. My two younger siblings are currently adopted and are very ambitious to do well in life. My mom works many jobs to try to get her life back in order. My dad remains constantly trapped in many drug addictions, and cycles through jail and prison. As for me, I live a comfortable, but challenging life at Goshen Valley Boys Ranch. Over the years in foster care, I've lived with 16 different couples, been to eight different schools, and had six caseworkers and three CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) workers. Still, I feel I'm blessed to be alive.

Habitat Dedication
by Doug Neale, Outreach Board & Habitat Coordinator

Redeemer's 16th consecutive Habitat home is complete! This year's habitat home was dedicated on October 6th when the finishing touches were applied, and a joyous celebration was shared by the new owner, Shayvana M., her family, Habitat officials, and about 60 volunteers from Redeemer, Cascade United Methodist Church and Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. "Shay" and her children Derrick, Rodney, Amarius and Mesheh will formally move into the house in early November and begin their new lives as proud and responsible homeowners. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all who helped build the house and to those who provided essential maintenance tools and supplies for the "Home Starter Kit" that will enable the family to care for their new nest. Redeemer's next Habitat project will start in August 2013. Please join us next year to build home number 17!

Wellspring Living Angel Tree

In December, Redeemer members will have a fun opportunity to shop for the girls at Wellspring Living. A living Angel Tree will be decorated with paper ornaments made by the girls.

Redeemer is building a Special Needs Children's Ministry to better serve all of our young members, regardless of "diffabilities". The term "diffabilities" reflects the fact that everyone has different abilities rather than focusing on disabilities. The Dignity Revolution Film Festival is an opportunity to learn about "diffabilities," and how our faith community can be more inclusive and foster spirituality in all of our children. Please join us on Saturday, November 10th for the Dignity Revolution Film Festival at Paideia School.

Community Outreach Spotlight

genesis (n.): an origin, creation, or beginning; the coming into being of something

Inside an unassuming building on Boulevard, with a view of downtown Atlanta, families are making new beginnings. At Genesis Shelter (www.genesisanewlife.org), families (mothers, fathers, both parents, siblings) with newborns two months or younger are welcomed into loving arms ready to guide them through many months to independence. Genesis provides housing for up to six months and continued support after families leave.

When was the last time you spent a weekend with 200 Lutheran women of all ages from all over the Southeastern U.S.? Well, I'd never had that experience before, but I am still inspired weeks later, and I want to share some of the reasons why:  Read on...

Blessing of the Pets
by Heidi Couch, Evangelism Board

The Evangelism Board hosted Redeemer's

annual Blessing of the Pets in honor of Saint Francis and our pets on Saturday October 6th. The day was perfect for outdoor worship with mild temperatures and sunny skies. Pastor Matt and Vicar Melody blessed each pet, making the sign of the cross, and anointed them with oil. In addition to the blessing, each of the 50 pets blessed received a Saint Francis medallion and a Certificate of Blessing. Pets and their humans enjoyed prizes, music, good fellowship, and Maria's special brunch. The Great Pet Trick Contest, MC'd by John Garrigan, was great fun for all.  Check out the pictures John McGrew has posted on the big screen in the Sims Atrium. Hope to see you and your pet next year.

Consecration Sunday a Success!

What a wonderful time we had on Sunday, October 21st for Consecration Sunday!  The church was filled with over 800 friendly Redeemer folks enjoying the children's music, Bishop Willimon's message, delicious food, and -- especially -- each other's company.  We were a larger crowd than last year which makes it all the more exciting as individuals to consider what Will Willimon asked of us: What could God be doing with someone like me?  Redeemer's ministries provide an endless number of ways to do God's work through giving our volunteer time, prayer support, and our financial resources. Thanks to the hundreds of members who celebrated Consecration Sunday by committing to return resources to God through a monetary pledge for 2013. Over 200 giving units filled out pledge cards totaling nearly $1 million. If you haven't done so yet, you will receive a letter with a pledge card next week. Additional cards are available at the information center in the Sims Atrium. Politics and the economy may seem uncertain, but we know two sure things: the pressing need in us to give and to be workers for God's kingdom.

Christmas Musicians and Flowers

It's time to pre-order poinsettias in honor/memory of family or friends to visually enhance our Christmas worship.  In addition the Atlanta Brass will be here at 8:30 and 11 pm on Christmas Eve, so you are also encouraged to make donations to the special musicians fund which will also be listed in the Christmas Eve bulletin in honor/memory of family or friends along with the flowers.

Envelopes are available in the pew racks or at the information table in the Sims Atrium. Please print clearly and place them in the offering plate with your check or return them to the church office by Wednesday, December 5.
