2-1-1's New Director!

The 2-1-1 Asheville Call Center is pleased to announce that Marla Browne has been hired as the 2-1-1 Director. Marla began her new role on September 3rd.  She has been working with 2-1-1 on a contract basis to develop a proposed "Coordinated Assessment Plan" for the Asheville-Buncombe Continuum of Care for the Homeless.

Marla comes to Asheville with experience in starting up a 2-1-1 within a United Way in Alabama and working to develop a statewide system there.  She also served as director of a crisis ministry.  Marla brings considerable knowledge of information and referral, community collaboration, fiscal management and disaster planning and response.

Ch-Ch-Ch- Changes!

 

The opening of the Health Care Marketplace in October 2013 will offer WNC residents a way to find health coverage that may better fit their budget and meets their needs.

There are three ways to apply for coverage: online through www.healthcare.gov, via mail and in person. 

In-person applications are offered for individuals who do not have access to the internet or are confused about their options. Consumers can get help from certified application counselor as they apply for and choose new insurance options. The federal government is currently in the process of training agencies in our area to become Marketplace-designated organizations.

Marketplace-trained navigation counselors will be available for in-person assistance, including educating consumers about their options and helping them complete an application for coverage.

 "The best way to protect our property and our residents from secondhand smoke ... is to stop allowing smoking in our buildings, "said Rick Allen, vice president and chief operating officer of PPM, a property management company that owns a number of buildings in Western North Carolina.

All PPM properties are going smoke-free from January 1st, 2014 on. The company is joining a nationwide trend to stop smoking in apartment buildings.

Though these new rules may help residents long term, many current smokers are wondering where to turn for help. The 2-1-1 database has a number of smoking cessation programs that can residents of smoke-free buildings or anyone else who wants to stop their nicotine dependence, including QuitLineNC.

QuitLineNC provides free tobacco treatment services to any North Carolina resident who needs help quitting tobacco use. A coach will help create a personalized quit plan that includes dealing with triggers and tips for quitting. QuitLineNC will send free, targeted materials. If eligible and funds allow, QuitLineNC will send free nicotine replacements to a person's home.
