Health Care Reform
The passing of the Affordable Care Act enacted widespread change in America's health care industry and has already begun to affect the way people receive their care. There are a few websites dedicated to enabling consumers to learn more about upcoming changes. Healthcare.gov is a federally sponsored website designed to prepare consumers for the opening of the healthcare marketplace on October 1, 2013. The website offers information on new health insurance options for individuals and families, small business owners and self employed persons. Use the above link to find out more or call 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325). Another helpful website for information about the upcoming health insurance marketplace is GetCoveredAmerica.org. Run by the national campaign Enroll America, this website offers a non government alternative to understanding the changes enacted by the Affordable Care Act. The new health care legislation offers many options, so be certain to learn more about what is available for you, your family, and your clients. NC 2-1-1 will be at the table in the coming months, staying informed about national and local efforts to connect people to health care. 2-1-1 is free, 24/7 and confidential, so please feel free to call anytime if you need help.

Mature Driver Safety
 |
AARP, formerly the American Association for Retired People, and other organizations dedicated to older Americans offer safety courses for elder individuals who wish to improve their driving skills.
These classes are for individuals age 55 and older and focus on safe driving practices for older adults. Classes often include current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today's increasingly challenging driving environment. People who successfully complete the courses may receive certificates that make them eligible for reduced motor vehicle liability insurance. For more information, check the link above.
Tip: When viewing the list of programs on the 2-1-1 database, use "Refine your results" to find services nearest you. Contact programs or classes closest to you.

2-1-1 Success Story
|

We love when our callers get connected! Because 2-1-1 tracks information about a broad range of health and human services, specialists have the tools and referrals to get our callers connected to the supports they need.
One 2-1-1 referral specialist, Rachel, recently spoke to a man who was living in his car, frustrated because he could not get a job because he had no address to put on his applications.
After reviewing shelter options, Rachel realized that the man was hesitant about shelters because he also had a young child he was taking care of. She began to look through the 2-1-1 database for other housing options available to the caller.
Rachel made certain that the man and his child were safe and had food, then she made some referrals to permanent housing options. When Rachel followed up, the man and his family were in a home and able to look for employment. They were even able able to get some furniture through Rachel's suggestion.
Success stories like this truly take a team and community effort. Without such a strong network of service providers and without our dedicated NC 2-1-1 database staff, Rachel may not have been able to find a program to fit her caller's needs.
