Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, ELCA
November 12, 2014
Dear Partners in Ministry,

It is with joy, sadness and pride that I write to inform you that Molly Beck Dean, Assistant to the Bishop and Youth Ministry Specialist, has accepted the position of Program Director for the ELCA Youth Gathering, and will end her service with our Synod in January.

Molly's love for our young people, her attention to equipping adult leaders, her creativity, courage and her deep spirituality have touched thousands of young lives during her 12 years as our Youth Ministry Specialist. During that time she has built a strong program in our Synod that includes our popular junior- and senior-high gatherings, service days and a series of life-changing servant trips for youth and young adults. Molly has equipped our Synod's youth workers through an ongoing series of networking gatherings, personal mentoring, and congregational consultations. In addition Molly has represented our Synod in the areas of camp and campus ministries. I am personally grateful for her passion for ensuring that young people are better represented in our Synod and formed as leaders to serve the whole church.

In her new position, Molly will be responsible for the Youth Gatherings that bring together nearly 40,000 young people, adults, volunteers and staff for an amazing experience of faith formation and service. This is a huge opportunity and challenge, and I know that the Holy Spirit will guide and bless Molly as she is called to this new work.

In an announcement to ELCA Congregation and Synodical Mission staff today, Executive Director Stephen Bouman said: "Molly brings many years of effective leadership in youth ministry at every level of the church's life: from the parish to the synod and now, the churchwide context. She believes in strong collective leadership and partnership. She has deep commitments to justice and the inclusion of all God's children. We look forward to her leadership and partnership in the mission of our church in the days ahead."

I ask you to join me in thanking Molly for the difference she has made in our Synod these last dozen years, and in praying for Molly, Brent, Clara and Connor as they begin this new chapter in their lives. As we draw closer to the end of Molly's ministry among us, we will find appropriate ways to celebrate her impact on the Synod and let her know that she will, indeed, be missed by so many.

With and in Christ,

The Rev. Claire S. Burkat
