The ELCA and Diversity

Bishop Eaton
Bishop Eaton

"I believe this church truly longs for the realization of the vision in Revelation, or at least the glorious company of multicultural young people on a hillside meadow singing the 1970's Coca Cola jingle 'I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony'," Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton writes in her monthly column for The Lutheran magazine. "I yearn, not for a color-blind world, but for a color-amazed world where distinctiveness and diversity aren't washed out but are noticed and treasured as God's gracious gift. The only norm is that we are all children of God and sisters and brothers to one another.

"We aren't there yet. In the first 25 years of the ELCA's existence we've barely moved the needle on the percentage of our members who are people of color or whose primary language is not English," the Presiding Bishop says. Pray for Our Youth at SHYG

Please pray for the more than 200 youth and adults gathered Friday through Sunday for the Senior High Youth Gathering. They will be exploring the theme "Beautifully Broken" (2 Cor. 4:7). Through conversation in small group, service projects, worship, prayer and hearing testimonies, participants will explore how each of us is broken in some way, but that through God's love, power, sacrifice and grace we are indeed beautiful.

From the SHYG team ~ A huge THANK YOU to everyone who brought in donations of felt for the SHYG felt collection! These scraps will be made into 2 beautiful banners during the course of the SHYG weekend retreat, after which they will travel throughout the synod visiting churches during the year. Thanks for your donation, which helps us save money and makes each congregation a special part of these banners!

Into the Wild: A Lenten Liturgy and Intergenerational Study on Hunger

This five-part program follows the story of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness and explores what it means to live out our faith in a world of hunger, suffering and hope. Each session is divided into small-group and large-group settings and can be adapted to fit your congregation's educational forums, workshops and mid-week gatherings. Download and print this resource along with a family discussion guide.

As the group takes part in the spiritual practice of fasting during the event, they will go through activities and times of reflection centered on seven faith practices. Each activity is designed for "in the moment" learning and reflection to help youth apply what they discover in their own congregations and communities.
