Council Leaders Network Gathers With Bishop

Council Leaders met with the Bishop at St. Paul's, Glenside.

The Mission Investment Fund ELCA helped sponsor the event.

More than 80 congregational council officers gathered with Bishop Burkat on Saturday, March 9, to discuss the opportunities presented by the decline in religious participation in our society.

Bishop Burkat shared her perspective on the "great emergence" that is springing up new faith expressions and challenging denominations and other religious institutions to change how they do business. The Bishop also said that the Synod itself has responded to these changes, operating with fewer staff but with a "constellation" of teams and networks that arise and shift based on ministry needs. The Synod staff works with more than two dozen teams, from candidacy to Tanzania, social media to disaster response, youth to retired pastors, she said.

Though nearly 1 in 5 Americans - and 1 in 3 people under age 30 - report having no religious affiliation, it's not time to panic, said Bob Fisher, assistant to the bishop for mission interpretation. Though young people are not looking for "grandma's Sunday service," congregations are experimenting with "God on Tap" events and dinner conversations to engage young adults. The Church has many treasures in its attic - including small, house groups, spiritual practices such as lectio divina and contemplative prayer, and more - that can be dusted off and repurposed to speak to the emerging culture.

Communicators Network Online
via Facebook

We've opened up a new online forum for congregation communicators on Facebook. The SEPA Communicators group can be found at http://www.facebook.com/groups/sepacomm. It's a place for anyone involved in communications ministry - newsletter editors, social media ministers who manage Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest sites, website designers and managers, e-news editors, AV and worship tech teams - to ask questions, share ideas and network with fellow communicators. In addition, training events on social media, websites and e-newsletters are planned for the near future. Invite your congregation's communicators to sign up for the online network. For information contact Bob Fisher at rfisher@sepa.org or 267.323.3743

March has been designated for a special appeal for SEKOMU, our Tanzanian companion synod's university. We're working together to raise $20,000 for desks, chairs and technology infrastructure for one of the lecture halls in the new Academic Building just completed on campus. Thanks to all the congregations who have scheduled time to lift up the work of this University, and support its work, both by recognition of the outstanding achievements, and also with financial support.

We know March is busy, and if you haven't been able to set aside time we encourage you to lift up this important ministry on a Sunday later on, perhaps in April. You can learn more and download the SEKOMU newsletter and bulletin insert at http://www.ministrylink.org/article/furnish-sekomu-lecture-hall-in-march/. If you need additional newsletters, email waechterjb@aol.com. For more information contact Susan Pursch, chair of the SEPA SEKOMU Coordinating Committee, at spursch@verizon.net

Please note: Congregation gifts may be included at the time of your regular monthly benevolence to Synod, with a separate designation for SEKOMU gifts.

Visited SEKOMU? Then Save June 2

Over the last seven years, we estimate that over 60 members of our Synod have visited our Companion Synod, the North Eastern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) and visited SEKOMU. We're planning a picnic for those visitors, at the Fort Washington State Park, on Sunday afternoon, June 2, 2013, beginning at 4pm. Save the date now, and we'll provide more details later. If you are interested in attending or have questions, please email spursch@verizon.net.

Many congregations form separate 501(c)3 nonprofits to draw new funding, new people and new partners into ministry work. Learn how in a webinar presented by Wheat Ridge Ministries on Wednesday, March 20, 3-4 pm (Eastern). You'll get tips from Joy Skjegstad, author of Starting A Nonprofit At Your Church (Alban Institute, 2002) and a veteran leader of church-based nonprofits. This webinar is ideal for pastors, staff, Board members and volunteers from congregations considering establishing a separate nonprofit or "re-starting" an existing one.
