Dear youth and parents,
Having celebrated Alison Nicoll's last day with us as Assistant Minister for High School this past Sunday, I've started getting questions about what happens next. So, here's a handy guide to how the process works when we have a job opening in the youth ministry:
- The job description for the position is reviewed and updated. (Michelle Ingram and I completed that this week.)
- A cover letter and job description are sent to the Field Education office at Brite Divinity School to post on their job board and forward to incoming and current students who are interested in a position like this. (I let Brite's Director of Field Education know about the position last week so that he could begin pulling together profiles of students who might be a good match, and sent the updated cover letter and job description today.)
- Once I have received one or more profiles of students who look like a good match, I will put together an interview committee to help me review all the profiles and conduct interviews. Cyndy Twedell will be an ex-officio member of this committee as our current head of staff.
- After receiving input from the committee, I will extend an offer to one of the candidates. If the candidate accepts, we will work out all the employment details with Michelle Ingram and then announce the new Assistant Minister.
- If we are not able to identify a candidate who we believe is a good fit for the position, we may decide to broaden our search to look for a qualified individual who is available short term in more of an interim capacity. (This worked well for us in 2009, when recent Brite graduate Isaac Varner served as Interim Assistant Minister for the fall, and we hired Jessica Vacketta that January.)
If you have any questions related to this, please don't hesitate to e-mail me at russ@uccftw.com. Searching for a new addition to the youth ministry staff is always an exciting process, and I'm looking forward to receiving profiles of candidates soon.

Grace and peace, Russ

Sunday School Sabbath month begins this Sunday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday school classes for youth and children will begin a month-long break starting this Sunday, July 3. (Preschool childcare is still available all morning each Sunday.) This Sunday School Sabbath is intended to provide a period of rest and renewal for teachers, participants, and families at UCC, and allows time to do some things you may not normally do on Sunday mornings. What can you do with that hour each Sunday morning? Here are some ideas:
- Sleep in and take your time getting ready for 11:00 worship.
- Go to the 9:00 service, then go out for brunch with family or friends.
- Invite a friend to worship and show them around the building.
- Grab a couple of seats in one of the many conversation spaces throughout the building and catch up with someone you haven't talked to in a while.
However you choose to spend this time of rest and renewal from our usual programming, we hope it's a life-giving and rejuvenating time.
Last Sunday to buy stock in our youth mission trips!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our congregation has an opportunity to buy stock in our youth mission trips at the table located in the Gallery on Sunday mornings. At $10 per share, the stock will fund work projects at Loch Leven Camp and All Peoples Community Center and earns an invitation to a "shareholders luncheon" at the end of the summer to hear about the trips. If you or your child can't make the trip, this is a great way to support youth missions and get an exclusive report about the trips afterward. Just stop by the table in the Gallery this Sunday morning after either worship service or and one of the trip participants will be happy to help you.CYF Mission Trip participants: You will need to select at least two time slots to sell stock. Burger's Lake outing for 5th-8th graders on July 13
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Tyler Heston, Assistant Minister for Middle School:
On Wednesday, July 13, all youth who have completed 5th through 8th grade will have a sunny, summer outing to Burger's Lake, which offers a one-acre lake for swimming with 6 diving boards, a 20-foot water slide, and a 25-foot trapeze. Come wearing a swimsuit, t-shirt, flip flops, and any other swimwear, and bring $10 to cover entrance to the park (extra money for the snack bar is optional - we will provide ice cream sundaes!) This'll be a fun afternoon, and an excellent chance to bring friends along to a UCC Youth event.
Meet at UCC at 1 p.m. to carpool over (we will return by 5 p.m.), or meet us at Burger's Lake (1200 Meandering Road) at 1:30 p.m. (we will depart the lake by 4:30 p.m.) Email me at tyler.heston@uccftw.com to RSVP so that we can work out carpooling
Parents: If you are available to help drive to or from the lake, or you'd like to join us for the afternoon, let me know!
