~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
Dear youth and parents, This Sunday is an exciting one for a couple of reasons:
1. We'll be having our annual Youth Family Roundup in Walker Fellowship Hall during the Sunday school hour. Our goal is to create a fun, festive "one-stop shop" to get ready for a new year with UCC's youth ministry, and I look forward to seeing many of you there.
2. Our new Assistant Minister for Middle School, Tyler Heston, will be joining us for his first official Sunday at UCC. Please be sure to say hello to Tyler at the roundup and make him feel welcome here at UCC!
Read on for more info on the roundup, Tyler, and our new weekly program schedule for this school year.
Grace and peace,
Russ
Youth Family Roundup for all youth & parents this Sunday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We're beginning a new year in UCC's youth ministry, and there's so much to share about what's coming up and how to get involved! To help get everyone oriented we're hosting a Youth Family Roundup this Sunday morning, August 16 at 10 a.m. in Walker Fellowship Hall. All 6th-12th grade youth and parents are invited to join us for a fun and informative event where you can:
- Meet our staff, teachers, and youth group sponsors - Pick up a major events calendar to plan ahead through 2016 - Hear about this year's camps, retreats, and mission trips - Sign up for volunteer opportunities big and small - Preview our weekly youth programming
- Hear about (and sign up for) our youth handbell choirs - Pre-register for Disciples Class, our baptism/confirmation prep course
- Proof your family's information for the forthcoming youth directory - Take what you're learning and use it to win fun prizes
Round up your classmates and other parents and we'll see you there, pardner!

Tyler Heston called as Assistant Minister for Middle School
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tyler Heston has accepted an invitation to serve as Assistant Minister for Middle School at UCC. Tyler is beginning his first year at Brite Divinity School, where he will be pursuing a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Tyler graduated in May from the University of Memphis with a degree focused on Religion in Society, and he received certification as a Nonprofit Professional from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. He has extensive experience working with middle school youth as a Sunday school teacher and mission trip sponsor at the large congregation where he grew up, and has spent summers interning with Mosaic Church in Chicago and the Friends of Jesus Fellowship & Ruth Ellis Center in Detroit. During college he connected with a Disciples congregation for the first time when he joined Kingsway Christian Church, where he served as a deacon.
Alison Nicoll will transition into the Assistant Minister for High School position, providing leadership for our 9th-12th grade youth. Tyler and Alison will share an office on the 3rd floor in Room 316, where Tyler can be reached by phone at extension 268 and via e-mail at tyler.heston@uccftw.com (though his e-mail won't be live until next week). Tyler will be joining us for the Youth Family Roundup, so be sure to introduce yourself to him this Sunday morning!
New weekly schedule for youth groups and handbell choirs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After coordinating with several other ministry areas and soliciting feedback from families, we have put together a new weekly schedule for youth groups and youth handbell choirs for this program year. The new Sunday evening schedule is as follows:
5:00-6:00
Middle school youth group, high school handbell choir
6:00-6:30
Snack supper (all youth, children, college, and volunteers)
6:30-7:30
High school youth group, middle school handbell choir
Also, note that our children's Sunday night program (CCF/JYF, grades 1-5) will start at 5 p.m. and join with youth for dinner. Afterward, Kera plans to offer some optional programming for kids waiting on an older sibling who will be here until 7:30. Handbell choirs will meet on August 23 and 30, with a parent meeting in between the rehearsals at 6 p.m. on each of those Sundays. After a break for labor day weekend, handbell rehearsals will resume on September 13 and youth groups will have their first meetings that night.
