Dear youth and parents,

Sunday night our Fellowship Hall was filled with volunteers of all ages for Christmas Angels Wrap Night. Over the course of the evening our church put together over 500 bags of clothing, books, and other items for Fort Worth ISD students who need them, and it was remarkable how quickly everyone made it happen. There were LOTS of youth and parents pitching in, and it was great to see so many different people working together for such an important cause!

This will be the last youth e-news that I send before I leave for my three-month sabbatical on Sunday morning, and while I will be spending Christmas in Virginia with my family I will be thinking about Christmas here and praying that all of you have a meaningful holiday.

Read on for more information about Christmas Eve services, our final football parking fundraiser, midwinter retreats at Disciples Crossing, and more.

Grace and Peace,
Russ

Russ begins a three-month sabbatical this Sunday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In October I reached 7 years as Associate Minister for Youth here at UCC, and I am blessed to have the opportunity to take a three month sabbatical for rest, renewal, and study. During those three months I am looking forward to:
- Driving home to Virginia for an extended holiday stay with my family (who will appreciate extra time with grandkids).
- Taking my oldest daughter, Bell, to Washington, DC for a couple of days to visit some museums and kid-friendly sites.
- Taking a trip to England and Scotland with Sarah over Spring Break to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, explore my ancestral roots in Kilmarnock, and visit some churches doing innovative ministry in a "post-Christian" context.
- Attending the 2nd annual Progressive Youth Ministry Conference in Chicago, where I will connect and learn alongside my peers from churches theologically similar to UCC.
- Spending extra time with my family, exercising more, reading more, tackling some projects at my house, and taking some classes here in town.
Alison, Michael, and Susan will be covering the majority of my duties during my absence, assisted by several of the Associate Ministers on staff. I have no doubt they will do a great job, but I appreciate your prayers as they take on extra work in my absence and I seek to make the most of my time away. I will look forward to sharing about my experiences after I return the week of March 23!
Join us for Christmas Eve at University Christian Church
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
University Christian Church will again offer four different Christmas Eve services, providing a great opportunity to invite friends and family to our church for one of these meaningful worship experiences. This year we will offer services at noon, 5 p.m., 8 p.m., and 11 p.m. Click here for information on each of the services, and feel free to share the promotional video below to invite people to worship here:

Final football parking fundraiser of the year on January 2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Football season is almost over, and youth and parents have one more opportunity to raise money by parking cars in the church lots for a football game. Part of the money  raised goes into youth and youth handbell choir reserve funds, and part goes into the individual accounts of those who work each game to use for camps, retreats, trips, and other church events. This year, each hour is worth $50 per family member who works.
The Armed Forces Bowl will be held at Amon G. Carter Stadium on January 2, when Houston will take on Pittsburgh. Kickoff is at 11 a.m., and we will need volunteers in shifts from 7 a.m. - 12 p.m. to direct cars and take money for our parking lots. To see which slots are available and reserve your shift (up to 3 hours), click the button below:
Registration open for midwinter retreats at Disciples Crossing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bell at Disciples Crossing~~~

Our youth have the opportunity to join others from Disciple churches around the area for two upcoming midwinter retreats at Disciples Crossing, our church camp in Athens. The Chi Rho Midwinter Retreat for grades 6-8 will be January 30 - February 1, and the CYF Fall Retreat for grades 9-12 is February 20-22. These annual retreats offer youth the opportunity to grow closer to God and one another through worship, recreation, prayer, small groups, and interest groups that include options like sports, dance, art, service, photography, and more.

Participants will meet at UCC at 5:30 p.m. on the Friday of each retreat weekend to share a charter bus to camp, and will return around 12:30 p.m. the following Sunday. The cost for Chi Rho is $45 (UCC covers half of the $90 registration) and additional scholarships are available upon request. Online registration deadlines are January 19 for Chi Rho and February 9 for CYF.

Please note: Disciples Crossing has switched over to online registrations, which should make the process much simpler. You will create an account on their secure website, select your event, make your payment, and complete a health form online. Afterward, that camper information is saved for future camps and retreats - all you have to do is validate or update the existing health form for the participant.  Click here to register for the retreats.

On the payment screen, be sure to use the discount code HALFSCHOLARSHIP since UCC will be covering half of your registration cost. You will pay the remainder by debit or credit card. If you plan to use your football parking account to pay the remainder, use the discount code FULLSCHOLARSHIP and we will follow up with you to debit your parking account. Several people have reported difficulties with the webpage while using Firefox, so please use a different web browser to register (Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer).

Parents: We will need adult chaperones to attend these retreats as well. If you're interested in serving as an adult sponsor, contact Alison Nicoll at alison.nicoll@uccftw.com for the Chi Rho Retreat or Michael Yandell at michael.yandell@uccftw.com for the CYF Retreat.
