Dear youth and parents,

One of the shifts that I have appreciated seeing during my tenure at UCC is the effort made by our men's and women's ministries to ensure youth are invited and welcomed at the events they sponsor. This has provided some excellent opportunities for intergenerational ministry, and two such events are coming up in the next week: A men's movie night this Saturday evening and a women's luncheon next Sunday (featuring one of our perrenial Disciples Class mentors). Not only do these events provide opportunities for multiple generations to gather together and interact, they also offer parents and grandparents an easy way to invite young people to do something together and have meaningful conversations related to the program. Keep your eyes open this year for one of these opportunities that works for your family, and take advantage of a great way to connect!

Read on for more information on men's movie night, the women's luncheon, an outing for the Roots program, and more.

Grace and Peace,
Russ

Men's Movie Night this Saturday featuring Nebraska
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Older youth are invited to a movie night sponsored by UCC's Men's Ministry this Saturday, September 20 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 207 featuring a chicken dinner ($5). (Suggestion: Go with your dad, grandfather, or an adult mentor in the church, if that's an option.) The film Nebraska, nominated for 6 Oscars, tells the story of an aging father determined to make a trip from Montana to Nebraska to claim a sweepstakes prize, and his estranged son who accompanies him on the journey. The film stars Bruce Dern, Will Forte, and June Squibb, and is rated "R" primarily for language. (The studio had sought a "PG-13" rating, and many critics say the "R" rating was too harsh. For a parent guide detailing elements/scenes in the movie that contribute to the rating, click here.)  Afterward, Dr. Daniel Terry will lead a discussion focused on some of the themes in the film, providing a great springboard for continued father/son conversation.
Roots participants meet for Sweet Frog this Sunday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Alison Nicoll, Assistant Minister for Middle School:

This Sunday, September 21, 6th graders and high school mentors
participating in the Roots program will meet under the porte-cochere at 3:45 p.m. to walk to Sweet Frog before evening youth group meetings! This is a great opportunity to not only get fro-yo with your Roots buddy, but to get caught up on the first few weeks of school and to check-in with one another. Please be sure to check in with your buddy to see if they will be there! To help with the cost, we are suggesting a $3 donation. Can't wait to see you there!

Sandi Kennedy
Join us Sunday, September 28, for the Women's Ministries lunch featuring one of our own talented women--Sandi Kennedy, UCC Board Chair.

Sandi is an Elder, a regular Disciples Class mentor, and has served in leadership in almost every area of the church.

The $10 lunch will be at 12:15 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Prepaid reservations can be made online through Friday, September 19 (click here) or Sunday, September 21 at The Arches Information Desk.

Plan to be part of this exciting event, and invite the women of all ages who have made a difference in your life!

Want a one-time volunteer gig? Provide a snack supper!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Youth parents! See the youth up close, personal and appreciative by serving Snack  Supper on Sunday night. Snack supper is a great way to see and get to know the youth, and it's fun!
Snack supper graphic The commitment is for one Sunday evening, from about 5:45-7 p.m., plus cooking or shopping time - you decide how much time you want to spend on preparation. Dinner is served at 6:15 p.m. in the third floor kitchen for 30-40 youth, children, and college students. All the paper goods, cutlery, drink supplies, and most condiments are there for you. You provide the food, fix lemonade (provided), serve everything and clean up. You can choose to donate the meal, or you can be reimbursed up to $100 if you provide itemized receipts. You will receive a reminder e-mail the week before your snack supper that includes additional useful tips and suggested menus.
The third floor kitchen can be used anytime after 2:30 p.m. on Sundays for advance prep. (Sandwiches are just as popular as anything else, so cooking isn't required if that's not your thing.) If you prefer to purchase all or part of the food already prepared, that's great too. There's also a fridge and freezer you can stash things in.
