Dear youth and parents,
Recently I had the opportunity to spend two weeks teaching the People's Bible Class on Sunday mornings, and I was very grateful for their invitation. My topic was "Unpacking Scripture With Youth," and my goal was to help a group of adults who take Bible study seriously understand how we approach the Bible with middle and high school youth. In the first session I talked about some of the foundational ideas, principles, and realities that are part of unpacking scripture with youth in our church. In the second, I shared a lesson from the "Re:Form" curriculum our 8th graders use on Sunday mornings to demonstrate a creative, relevant Bible lesson for youth.
One of the key things I conveyed that I think parents should understand is this: Our youth have a pretty good sense of what they believe, but they want help articulating those beliefs. They are regularly challenged by their peers who have a different understanding of the Bible, and they often have a hard time putting their own understanding into words. You might think that means that our youth want their ministers and adults to teach them our own interpretations to counter their peers - but I haven't found that to be the case. In fact, on several occasions when our high schoolers perceived that was happening they were pretty resentful. Instead, I hear a desire for adults to teach them the history, context, and other relevant factors that relate to a biblical passage so that they can interpret the Bible for themselves. And really, that's who we are as Disciples. We're not a church that arms our youth with an alternative set of rigid talking points and out-of-context "proof texts" to use. We're a church that wants to prepare our youth for a lifetime of biblical interpretation by providing them with the tools and framework to do so. My hope is that as they move into adulthood, they will seek out faith communities that continue to guide and equip them on that life-long journey as students of the Bible.

This week's Lenten idea for families: Receive
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From Alison Nicoll, Assistant Minister for Middle School:
As we continue our study on Sticky Faith Everyday: Noticing God More in Chi Rho youth group, we will be focusing this week on different gifts that we receive from others, considering which ones have "strings" attached to them, and learning how the gift of salvation comes from God without any strings attached.
The weekly Family Guide offers some great ideas for showing your appreciation to people in your family and thinking together about the obstacles you face in your lives. Download a copy here and try out some of the suggestions at home next week so that your family can consider how better to "receive" in the season of Lent. |
New high school Bible study continues this Wednesday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Jessica Vacketta, Assistant Minister for High School:
I've had lots of requests for a mid-week Bible study, so I'm excited to offer one for 9th-12th grade youth this Lenten season. The study began on Wednesday, February 27 and will continue through March 27. We will gather each week from 6:15-7:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor kitchen. Dinner will not be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own "sack supper." During this 5-week study, we will discuss questions from Christian Piatt's book Banned Questions About the Bible. Youth are encouraged, but not required, to purchase this book ($14) and bring it to our meetings. If you have any questions or are interested in participating in this study, please contact me at jessica@uccftw.com. |

Prom Dreams volunteer meeting on March 21 at 5 p.m.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prom Dreams, a ministry of University Christian Church that provides free prom dresses to local girls who need them, will open for its third season on March 23. Last year this ministry distributed dresses, shoes, and jewelry to over 100 girls!
Prom Dreams is only possible due to donations and volunteers who help the young women select their "perfect" dress. Donations of dresses, shoes, jewelry, purses, and other accessories can be dropped off at the reception desk at any time. If you are interested in volunteering, mark your calendar for a volunteer meeting on Thursday, March 21 at 5 p.m. in the Prom Dreams space (upper level of the house next door to the church). Questions about Prom Dreams? E-mail Jessica Vacketta at jessica@uccftw.com. |
