Dear youth and parents,

On Tuesday evening I presented a summary of the major things we've learned from our participation in the Sticky Faith Cohort to UCC's Board of Stewards as part of their monthly meeting.  I wanted to share them with you so that you can see some of the things that are guiding how we think about ministry with children and youth at UCC.  Here's an abbreviated list of what's on the handout:

Importance of Congregational Worship: When children and youth worship regularly with the entire congregation, their faith is more likely to stick after they graduate from high school.

Intergenerational Programs and Connections: Kids who regularly participate in programs and activities that include a wide variety of ages are more likely to develop a healthy, lasting faith.

5:1 Ratio for our Kids: Every kid should be able to name five non-staff adults from our church that are important to them (know them by name, know what's happening in their life).

College Transition: We need to prepare our kids for living a life of faith in college before they depart, and the youth ministry should provide a connection to home during their freshman year.

Importance of Faith at Home: Faith-related conversations and practices at home and within a family multiply the "stickiness" of what happens at church.

Shift from "Performance-Based" Christianity: We often point to those with the highest levels of participation in church activities as model Christians, not those with a faith that shapes their lives and informs their actions.

Create Space for Questions: Kids who have room to question their faith or wander from church and still feel like a loved, valued part of the community develop a more mature, sticky faith.

Technical Change vs. Adaptive Change: Churches often try to apply technical solutions to problems, when the issue really centers on the culture of the community or the nature of the system.

If you'd like to see the full handout that includes implications and key questions for UCC based on these points, click here.  And, as always, feel free to contact me if something piqued your interest or raised questions for you.

Grace and Peace,

Farewell celebration for Herb Murray set for November 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Herb as Lando ~
Last week I received Herb Murray's resignation, and all youth families should have received a letter from Herb this past weekend.  (If you haven't seen the letter, you can read it here.)  It has been a great joy to work with Herb, and so much of the energy and vitality found in our ministry with middle school youth is tied to his leadership over the past 2+ years.  Many of you know what a talented artist and graphic designer he is, and I have no doubt that his gifts will be put to great use as he follows that calling.
Everyone will have an opportunity to wish Herb well at a farewell celebration on Sunday evening, November 4.  We are hammering out details, but I encourage you to save the date and plan on a festive event with food and tomfoolery that parallels our normal youth group time slot (starting around 6:15 p.m.)
Next youth football parking fundraiser - tomorrow vs. Tech
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~TCU Logo~

From Mike Morton, football parking coordinator:

The next football parking fundraiser is this Saturday, October 20 against Texas Tech, and we need 25-30 volunteers.

As a reminder, while every volunteer earns funds that can be used toward the cost of retreats, mission trips, handbell choir tour, and other youth activities, the majority of what is raised goes to help fund both UCC's youth ministry and youth handbell program. Our goal is to  limit volunteer shifts to two hours each week and so that more people can earn funds to help with the net cost of youth activities.

The game against Texas Tech is this Saturday, October 20 and kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. We need volunteers in the following shifts:

10 a.m.  - 3 people (min. 2 adults) for 2-hour shift for TCU band and early customers

10:30 - 7 more people (min. 3 adults) for a 2-hour shift at the reserved lots

11:30 - 8-10 people for a 2-hour shift

12:30 - 4-6 people for remaining band parking and finish cash lots

1:00 - 4 people (2 must be adults) for a 2-hour shift at the reserved lots

If you're available for any of these shifts, show up at UCC and sign in at the table in the small north parking lot (by the playground and dumpster). If you have additional questions about this fundraiser, please email me at m_morton@sbcglobal.net
.

CYF Fall Retreat - registration deadline this Sunday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bell at Disciples Crossing~
Our youth have the opportunity to join others from Disciple churches around the area for two upcoming fall retreats at Disciples Crossing, our church camp in Athens. The Chi Rho Fall Retreat for grades 6-8 will be November 2-4, and the CYF Fall Retreat for grades 9-12 is November 9-11. These annual retreats offer youth the opportunity to grow closer to God and one another through worship, recreation, prayer, small groups, and interest groups that include options like sports, dance, art, service, photography, and more.
Participants will meet at UCC at 5:30 p.m. on the Friday each  retreat begins to share a charter bus to camp, and will return around 12:30 p.m. the following Sunday. The cost for each retreat is $90 and full or half scholarships are available upon request. Registration forms are due to the Youth Office by this Sunday, October 21 for CYF. The deadline for the Chi Rho Retreat has passed, but we can still accept forms at the moment because the event is not full.  You can download a form by clicking here
.
Parents: We will need adult chaperones to attend these retreats as well. If you're interested in serving as an adult sponsor, contact Herb Murray a
t herb@uccftw.com for the Chi Rho Retreat and Jessica Vacketta at jessica@uccftw.com for the CYF Retreat .
Raise money to fight hunger at the CROP Walk this Sunday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~CROP Walk graphic ~

The annual CROP Walk to support hunger relief will take place this Sunday afternoon, October 21, and we need your help! Many of our youth have found sponsors and collected donations for the event, but you're welcome to walk the 3.1 miles in solidarity with the hungry even if you haven't. Come to the Dee J. Kelly Alumni Center at TCU (2820 Stadium Drive) at 1:30 p.m. to be part of this walk that brings together churches throughout the area for a common cause. This year part of the proceeds will support the Tarrant Area Food Bank, and part will go to Church World Service to help people who walk even further distances for basic necessities every day.

There are trophies and prizes for churches with the most youth, total participants, fastest finisher, and more, so lace up some comfortable shoes, feel free to bring a pet or a stroller, and come walk this weekend!
