Echoes of the North Hollywood Shootout

Here's a sampling of what I've been working on lately for my clients:

  • A story for International Bowling Industry magazine on Level 257, an upscale Pac Man-themed restaurant and entertainment venue near Chicago.
  • Media relations for a home services company that helps consumers conserve water and energy.
  • Headline copy for the spring ad campaign of Council Thrift Stores.

Book 'Em

Looking for a good read?

This month I recommend:

The Burning Room

by Michael Connelly

(Grand Central Publishing)

Los Angeles is a great place to live if you like crime fiction. Raymond Chandler, James Ellroy, Walter Mosley and other top crime writers have set their books in the City of Angels.   Deciphering the real locations, events and people buried in these novels is a big part of the fun if you have been here for any length of time.

Literary detectives won't be disappointed by "The Burning Room," the latest Harry Bosch novel from former LA Times reporter Michael Connelly. The plot incorporates elements of the infamous 1997 North Hollywood Shootout (my neighborhood was on lockdown for hours,) a recent mayor and mariachis in the investigation of a cold case that's suddenly gotten very hot.

"The Burning Room" also introduces Lucia "Lucky" Soto, a beat cop promoted to detective when she survives a shoot-out of her own that kills her partner. The brass partner her with Bosch, who becomes her stern but savvy mentor. It's a promising relationship and rumor has it that Soto will return in the next Bosch novel. No crime in that.
