Bellylaughs from the Barrio

Here's a sampling of what I've been working on lately for my clients:

  • A story for International Bowling Industry magazine on Brooklyn Bowl, Las Vegas' newest live  music venue.
  • The third in a series of trade articles on how auto dealerships can improve the effectiveness of their call handlers.
  • Concept development for a website makeover for a social services agency.

Looking for a good read?

This month I recommend:

How to Be a Chicana Role Model

by Michele Serros

(Riverhead Books)

My first pick of 2015 is a bittersweet one. Sweet because this fictionalized memoir of a developing poet and writer is laugh-out-loud funny and insightful; bitter because its celebrated author Michele Serros passed away this month at the age of 48.

Serros grew up in the barrio in Oxnard, California. She writes lovingly and irreverently about her family, her neighborhood and her "outsider" culture in a way that readers of all backgrounds can recognize and enjoy.

Her odd jobs (cleaning up after the Flygirls on the set of "In Loving Color,) her guilty pleasures (seducing a fan with the promise of a love poem) and her trip to Mexico (to improve her Spanish language skills) are all comic fodder for her wry take on life and self-expression.

Lovers of Southern California culture in particular should pick up on Serros' special voice.
