Soul Damage from the Long War

Here's a sampling of what I've been working on lately for my clients:

  • Articles for International Bowling Industry magazine on Brooklyn Bowl's successful mashup of bowling and live concerts and a new bowling venture from the paterfamilias of "American Chopper."
  • An trade article on a new method of improving the handling of customer calls at auto dealerships. Surprisingly, in the Internet era 85% of auto sales still begin with a phone call to a dealer.
  • A media relations project for Pandora's Makeup Box, an innovative Canadian cosmetics company.

Book 'Em

This month I recommend:

Redeployment

by Phil Klay

(Penguin Press)

This Veteran's Day, thank a vet and take some time to learn about the effects of war on our latest generation of veterans.

A 2014 finalist for the National Book Award, this riveting collection of short stories takes a close and unflinching look into the wounded souls of men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. From an infantryman adjusting to life back home to an in-country chaplain contemplating the nature of "prayer in the furnace," Klay's characters are all struggling to come to terms with an experience that most of their countrymen don't seem to want to know much about.

Klay draws on the experiences of soldiers he met while deployed in Iraq with the Marines as a public affairs officer. His tour took him across the country in the tough year of 2007, and he examines the war and its emotional blowback from many angles.

"War is complicated and intense and it takes time and thoughts to understand what it was," Klay said in an interview. "You have to imagine yourself in other heads."

Easily the most gripping book I have read this year. Highly recommended.
