Rosie the Radioactive Riveter

Here's a sampling of what I've been working on lately for my clients:

  • A media relations program for the 29th annual Memorial Day Observance at Green Hills Memorial Park. It generated multiple print and electronic stories, including The Daily Breeze, Los Angeles Register, KTTV 11 and KCBS 2/KCAL 9.
  • A magazine story on the 75th anniversary of The National Bowling Association, a pioneering group of African-American bowlers who broke the color bar in bowling.
  • A white paper for the XPRIZE Foundation on its growing slate of ocean technology competitions.

The Love of Hockey

by James Duplacey

(Publications International)

"The Love of Hockey is a fast-paced skate through the thrilling, wild history of hockey-from Maurice "Rocket" Richard's explosive streak in the 1940s and 1950s to the U.S. hockey team's "Miracle on Ice" at the 1980 Olympic games to the Stanley Cup parades of the 21st century. Marvel at the artistry of Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby, the heavyweight brawl between Tahir "Tie" Domi and Bob Probert, and the outrageous exploits of enthusiastic fans.

Whether you are a longtime die-hard hockey fan or you are new to the game, The Love of Hockey is your center-ice seat for the whistling slap shots, bone-jarring hits, spectacular saves, and sudden-death classics that make up hockey." (Amazon.ca)

This chunky book for hockey fans is great for bedtime reading or browsing during the intermission between periods, offering loads of vintage photos and trivia from every era of hockey. It will keep you going during the off season (also known as summer,) especially if your local baseball team is in a slump, or like the LA Dodgers, unavailable on TV. Currently out of print, but worth tracking down if you're a puckhead.

The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II

by Denise Kiernan

(Touchstone)

"Atomic-bomb history includes works about the communities of workers attached to the main installations where the first nuclear weapon was built. Kiernan's contribution covers Oak Ridge, Tennessee, site of enormous factories built to separate uranium isotopes.

A type of oral history, Kiernan's account derives from her intensive interviews with 10 women who, in their youth, labored in a range of occupations at Oak Ridge, from janitor to machine operator to secretary to engineer.

Some commonalities of experience include the secrecy in which the women worked and the discrimination they endured (racial segregation in the case of the janitor; sexism in the cases of white women workers).

Kiernan snugly fits original research into the creation story of Oak Ridge and should engage readers interested in both women's history and the background of the atomic bomb." --Gilbert Taylor, Booklist

Laura says "I don't usually read books about wars, but I haven't ever seen anything written from the women's point-of-view, so this one grabbed me. This is such a great story of the nuclear age, and individual stories of silent sacrifices for the greater good."
