Legislators learn about regional electrical grid at LEHI 2015
A diverse class of 36 legislators from across the Canada and the United States participated in PNWER's Legislative Energy Horizon Institute (LEHI), held July 24-28 in Richland, Washington.

The 60-hour certificate program provides policymakers a solid understanding of how energy systems and infrastructure operate, how systems and infrastructure are funded and built, and how regulation and markets impact energy systems. Certificates in energy policy planning are awarded through PNWER's Energy Horizon Institute and the University of Idaho.

Oregon Coast Economic Summit starts August 26

The Oregon Legislative Coastal Caucus (OCES) is holding its 4th annual Oregon Coast Economic Summit which will take place on Wednesday, August 26 and Thursday, August 27 at Spirit Mountain Casino in Grande Ronde.

The Pacific NorthWest Economic Region invites you to take part in this economic conference to highlight the ways Oregon can work together with their coastal partners. PNWER will also be hosting a sidebar meeting on the future of the PNWER Ocean and Coastal Caucus to identify regional projects to take on that will bolster the coastal economy and preserve our coastline. The PNWER Ocean and Coastal Caucus is exploring ways to strengthen the voice of coastal jurisdictions throughout the region and develop partnerships across borders. This event will be the kickoff to a series of calls and events to improve regional coordination.

Following the Thursday night reception, on Friday morning, we will be touring the Marine Hatfield Science Center, Oregon's leading marine laboratory distinguished by its collaborative research partnerships.

The OCES Summit will feature highly informative panel discussions on a wide range of topics with a focus on the Oregon coast's unique economic diversity. The attendance of more than 400 policy decision makers from federal, state, local and tribal governments, as well as the numerous educators and representatives from the private sector promise to make this Summit a vital think tank for the exploration of new ideas and new approaches to problems and challenges that face our communities.

We would love to see you there. If you are interested in attending this conference, please follow this link to register.

New apprenticeship-matching service started in British Columbia

SkillSource, launched in British Columbia in 2014, is an innovative new service that matches job-ready apprentices with host employers. The service allows apprentices to complete the full scope of a trade and gives employers the flexibility to engage apprentices on an on-demand basis.  SkillSource provides full support to apprentices from registration to certification and to host employers, including recruitment, pre-screening of candidates, transferable skills identification, reference checks, safety certification and registration of the apprentices with the Industry Training Authority. SkillSource is a sponsor on behalf of the employer as well as administration and coordination with ITA and training providers, provision of payroll and benefits and Worker's Compensation coverage. The host employer provides relevant work experience and supervision to the apprentice and the apprentice receives improved exposure to full trade scope through worksite and employer rotation. This new approach ensures more apprentices secure the support they require from host employers for the duration of their apprenticeship; providing greater exposure to full scope of trade, and increasing completion rates, particularly for youth. It also helps remove the administrative burden employers face when wanting to take on apprentices for varied durations and provides a flexible and skilled workforce for short or long term work experience.
