THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT THIS YEAR!
Happy Holidays! It was an excellent year here at PNWER! As we hurry into 2015, we wanted to reflect back on the accomplishments of the year before we release our Annual Report in January.

Thank you for your support in 2014, and we look forward to working with you in 2015!

ANNUAL SUMMIT

We were very excited to initiate Hon. David Ramsay of the Northwest Territories as our 2014-2015 PNWER President during the Summit. Minister Ramsay is seen here to the right of Amb. Bruce Heyman.

Summit delegates discussed a variety of topics during the 22 working group sessions, touching on issues of energy; transportation; cross-border collaboration for the control of invasive species; and border issues, including a special round table session with U.S. Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman and Canada's Ambassador to the U.S. Gary Doer.

ECONOMIC LEADERSHIP FORUM
Seattle, Washington
The Pacific Gateway: Working Waterfront Session included a Port of Seattle Tour by boat, including stops at Vigor Shipyards, Holland America, Victoria Clipper, and SSA Marine Terminals.
Legislators and business leaders from the Northwest U.S. and Canada met November 19-22 in Seattle for the Economic Leadership Forum and the Converge@Seattle Innovation Summit.

Delegates collaborated to further develop the "Road Map to Net Zero Construction to Deep Retrofits by 2030;" launch a plan to prevent invasive species infestations that could cost the Pacific Northwest billions of dollars annually and destroy fresh water ecosystems; and discuss transportation issues in rail capacity and getting goods to market.

Next year's TRUE winter meeting will be held November 15 - 18, 2015 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories! Save the date and order yourself a warm jacket.

KEY SUCCESSES FROM 2014
Some of the highlights from our key program areas
  •  The Energy & Environment working group put forth the creation of a Roadmap to Netzero Construction and Deep Retrofits by 2030. This roadmap will focus on two targets, premised on cost-effective energy efficiency improvements in residential, commercial and industrial settings:
    1. Facilitate the achievement of net zero emissions for new buildings by 2030
    2. Encourage the reduction of energy/emissions of existing buildings.
  • The Center for Regional Disaster Resilience developed and promulgated the Washington State Port Mutual Aid Agreement. Eight ports have signed onto the agreement, and more are working the legislative process through their elected commissions. The Washington Public Port Association (WPPA) has agreed to be the holder of the signed agreements which will provide continuity going forward.

  • The Legislative Energy Horizon Institute graduated its fourth cohort in November, bringing the total number of LEHI graduates to 131. This program increases legislators' understanding of the North American energy system works and how the infrastructure is financed and built. More about the program available online
  • Hosted the third Arctic Roundtable in Washington, D.C. with a diverse array of stakeholders, subject matter experts, and policy makers in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Capitol. The forum included the entire Alaska Congressional delegation, key representatives from the State of Alaska's Arctic Policy Commission, U.S. and Canadian Federal leadership and private sector stakeholders.

  • The Center for Regional Disaster Resilience, in conjunction with the Idaho Bureau of Homeland Security, hosted the Idaho Cyber Security Interdependencies Workshop. This event is the first in a three year series meant to develop an Idaho Partnership for Infrastructure Security and discussed current cyber threats and common challenges with managing complex data, personal information, and cyber systems.
  • Kicked off a year-long project for the State of Washington to develop a framework for preventing the spread of invasive quagga and zebra mussels into the Region. This multi-state and province framework would outline the partnerships and recommended practices for creating a perimeter of protection around the whole PNWER region. Read the first event report.

White House Recognition - February 2014

In the wake of the North American Leaders' Summit in Toluca, Mexico, a fact sheet released by the White House Office of the Press Secretary gave special recognition to the cross-border efforts of the Pacific Northwest Economic Region in February of 2014.

The fact sheet, which announced initiatives from the Summit, specifically pointed to highly integrated economic regions such as the Pacific Northwest Economic Region as the U.S., Canada and Mexico look towards the creation of a Trilateral Research, Development and Innovation Council.

"It is great to see White House recognition for the consistent work that PNWER's member states and provinces have done throughout the years, especially on innovation and regional economic development," said Matt Morrison, PNWER's CEO.
