Welcome from Hon. David Ramsay, PNWER President
PNWER President, Hon. David Ramsay of Northwest Territories, welcomes you to the 2014 Winter Meeting in Seattle, Washington.

Welcome to the 2014 Pacific NorthWest Economic Region Economic Leadership Forum in Seattle!

This year, we are excited to bring you working sessions and policy tours that explore several topics impacting our regional economies, including energy and the environment, global trade, and trends and opportunities. In addition, we will be exploring Arctic issues, innovation, workforce development, transportation and market access. As we focus on these, and other key subjects, your participation will help to direct the work PNWER in the coming year. I am honoured to serve as your President, and I am inspired by the work PNWER has been able to accomplish in the last several months, including:

  • In September, we examined future challenges and opportunities for cooperation in the Arctic Region. I was joined by Alaska Representative Bob Herron and Senator Lesil McGuire, as well as Northwest Territories Premier, Robert R. McLeod, as we spoke at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Centre for Governance Innovation (CIGI) "Passing of the Arctic Council Torch" meeting in Washington, D.C.
  • In the past year, PNWER delegations visited Juneau, Olympia, Boise, Victoria, Washington, and Ottawa during legislative sessions. PNWER delegates participated in a number of committee hearings and meetings with leadership to discuss important regional issues impacting our shared economy.
  • Last week in Washington, D.C., at the Canadian Embassy, the 125th legislative participant in PNWER's Legislative Energy Horizon Institute certificate program for state/provincial/territory legislators graduated. This program was initiated by PNWER and partners, including: the University of Idaho, the U.S. Department of Energy, Natural Resources Canada, and the National Conference of State Legislators.

This forum offers the opportunity to accomplish much more. I encourage all participants to strengthen valuable connections with government and business leaders across our jurisdictional boundaries, and to work together to build collaborative solutions to the challenges we share in the Pacific Northwest. PNWER is a great laboratory for innovation and economic development. Thank you for being here and contributing your time and effort to this important work.

Sincerely,

Honourable David Ramsay

Northwest Territories

President, PNWER
