Delegates Explore Vancouver!
|
Delegates enjoyed a packed day visiting innovative Vancouver-area businesses. The day started with a harbour cruise hosted by Port Metro Vancouver.
The visit to North America's largest export port by tonnage and leader in environmental stewardship complemented the Summit's Market Access and Transportation sessions. Delegates viewed both the South Shore Terminals and North Shore Terminals before listening to a presentation from the Chamber of Shipping.
After the port, delegates saw first-hand the energy efficiency improvements discussed in the E nergy and Environment Session incorporated in The Belmont Building. RDH Building Engineering Ltd renovated the aging residential building by incorporating energy conservation measures (ECMs) such as triple glazed windows, insulation for the exterior of the walls, and the installation of Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV).
Sony Pictures Imageworks Canada hosted the delegates on a tour of their Yaletown studio. Sony Pictures Imageworks is the Academy AwardŽ-winning visual effects and animation unit of Sony Pictures Digital Productions known for live-action visual effects, dynamic creature and character animation and all-CG animation. The company, headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., recently completed work on Disney/Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.
The delegates finished the tour with a stop at Wavefront, a technology accelerator
that is focused on improving the success of Canadian companies in the wireless and mobile space.
PNWER would especially like to thank Westport Innovations, a natural gas transportation leader in incorporating natural gas technologies into applications such as a Volvo bi-fuel taxi off the line, a city trash hauler, or a customized Ford utility truck. We look forward to visiting them during our next trip to British Columbia.

Fitzsimmons Creek Renewable Energy Project
|
Many thanks to
Innergex for hosting the group at the Fitzsimmons Creek Renewable Energy Project. The delegates were able to see the run-of-river plant harness energy to power the ski resort's summer and winter operations. Agriculture Tour
PNWER would like to thank the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture for organizing an informative tour of key, cutting edge agriculture operations. Participants enjoyed an overview of the agriculture industry in B.C. by touring an innovative tomato producer at Houwellings Greenhouses, followed by a trip to the beautiful Krause Berry Farm for lunch. The tour finished with a visit to an anaerobic digestion facility and nutrient recovery system at Seabreeze Farm.
|
Green Whistler Walking Tour
After the Summit, delegates were able to learn more about Whistler by exploring the sustainability efforts of the Resort Municipality of Whistler. Many thanks to Her Worship Nancy Wilhelm-Morden for providing a great start to our tour of the energy efficient library, Austrian Olympic Passive House, and Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre.
Britannia Mining Museum
Attendees enjoyed traveling to nearby Squamish to visit the gold mine that was once the largest in the British Empire. The group traveled in the underground train system while a trip to the water remediation facility was an educational finish for the day.
