New U.S. Ambassador to Canada

Vice President Joe Biden swears in Bruce Heyman as the U.S. Ambassador to Canada.

Bruce Heyman, newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Canada, was sworn in on March 26. The Chicago investment banker and Democrat fundraiser said at the ceremony, "Here at the White House, we're again reminded of what an honour it is that he [President Obama] has entrusted me to represent the United States as ambassador to our closest friend and neighbour, Canada."

Alberta Premier Alison Redford resigns

 

Facing mounting criticism in Alberta, Alison Redford resigned after two years as Premier.

 

"I am not prepared to allow party and caucus infighting to get in the way of building a better future for our province," Redford said at a press conference announcing her resignation. 

 

Deputy Premier Dave Hancock has been serving as Premier since Redford's formal resignation took effect March 23.


Washington State Mudslide Relief

Rescue workers continue to work through mud on the west side of the Oso Mudslide on State Route 530 on March 26. Washington Air National Guard members partnered with the civilian volunteers in the search.

The PNWER region experienced a major disaster when a fatal mudslide destroyed a neighborhood and a highway in Oso, Washington. The official death toll stands at 17, but the search for victims continues. Our friends at United Way of Snohomish County have announced a recovery fund for mudslide relief.
