PNWER visits Juneau, Alaska

The Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) held a successful Capital Visit in Juneau on Jan. 22 and 23. Delegates attended several high-level meetings with Alaska State Governor Sean Parnell, Lt. Governor Mead Treadwell and Alaska State Legislative Leadership.

The PNWER delegation meets with Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell. From left: Colin Smith, Rep. Bob Herron, Deb Boone, Sen. Lisel McGuire, Gov. Sean Parnell, Robert Bouchard, Sen. John Coghill, Matt Morrison, Eddie Rideout and Steve Myers.

PNWER Vice President, MLA Alana DeLong from Alberta, joined with Representative Deborah Boone from Oregon; Robert Bouchard from the Northwest Territories; PNWER Private Sector Co-Chair Colin Smith; David Kettles, Director U.S. Relations with the Government of Alberta; and Eddie Rideout, Director from Yukon Government Ministry of Economic Development.

Lt. Gov Mead Treadwell (third from the right) and the PNWER delegation met to discuss important regional issues.

The delegation was treated to sitting in on the Governor's State of the State address to a joint session of the Alaska Legislature. The capital visit also included an engaging Arctic Roundtable, co-chaired by Senator Lesil McGuire and Representative Bob Herron. The roundtable gave legislators the opportunity to learn more about the PNWER Arctic Caucus and the progress of our working groups from the Anchorage Summit held in 2013.

The roundtable was also a great chance to work on developing the agenda for the upcoming PNWER Arctic Roundtable that will be held in Washington, D.C. on March 6, and to learn how we should engage the private sector in the Arctic.

The PNWER delegation with Rep. Peggy Wilson (center), had a great opportunity to talk about transportation issues in the region.

The delegation's discussion topics with legislators included such important topics as regional transportation bottlenecks, liquefied natural gas (LNG) proposed projects in Alaska, OR and B.C., as well as infrastructure development, and oil spill prevention for ships transiting the Aleutian Islands from North America's west coast. Market access for commodities in transit through Alaska was also discussed.
