Registering is easy! You sign up and pay for the glacier tour when you register for the PNWER Summit here . The tour is $100 which includes lunch, round-trip transportation from Anchorage to Whittier.
This July, more than 600 legislators, and leaders in government and business will be headed to Anchorage, Alaska for the 23rd Annual PNWER Summit (please see preliminary schedule here, and check back at the Summit website soon as the agenda becomes finalized).
The Summit will take place at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage, Alaska from July 14-19, 2013.
AGRICULTURE
PNWER's Agriculture working group session on Tuesday, July 16 will focus on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the impact of GMOS's and progress of the Regulatory Cooperation Council action plan. The session will also include a panel discussions with leading experts. Learn more about the various topics that we will explore in this session below.
Topics covered will include:
- The progress of the RCC Action Item Initiatives: crop protection products, mutual reliance on food testing results, and common approaches to food safety.
- Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL) and implications of mandatory COOL requirements on meat products; perspectives from both sides of the border.
- A discussion on Low Level Presence (LLP) of Genetically Modified (GM) crops in imports of grain, food and feed. GM issues are currently emerging in certain U.S. states (Washington, for example).
- Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP); Sanitary and Phytosanitary issues in relation to the TPP, specifically, the U.S.-proposed chapter in the agreement's text for an enforceable, dispute-settlement mechanism for TPP members; and/or intellectual property with respect to geographical indicators. This appeared in the Canada-European Union (EU) trade negotiations and will also appear in the U.S.-EU negotiations.
- Canada-U.S. Wheat, including the Canada-U.S. Grain and Seed Trade Task Group efforts to address regulatory differences impacting cross-border trade.
CROSS-BORDER LIVESTOCK HEALTH CONFERENCE
The PNWER Cross-Border Livestock Health conference on Wednesday and Thursday, July 17-18, 2013 will focus on 4 subject areas over the two days: Antimicrobial use in Livestock Production, Animal Welfare Pressures on the Food Industry, One Health and Electronic Certification Updates. The conference will include panel discussions. Topics will include:- Animal welfare pressures on meat processors in USA and Canada.
- Food costs and the consumer with increasing animal welfare pressures.
- One Health - Implications for Cross Border Trade.
- USDA Updates on E-Certification.
- Western States E-Certification Progress.
- E-Certification technology advancements - iPad app demonstration.
- Humans, livestock and wildlife interfaces in Alaska.

Dr. Robert Gerlach - Alaska State Veterinarian
Dr. Gerlach works for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation as the Alaska State Veterinarian. He is responsible for animal health regulations, animal disease surveillance and the state's Fish Monitoring Program. He coordinates Alaska's Fish Advisory Program.
