BAND

The Pine Tree High School Band competed at the UIL Region IV Marching Contest on Oct. 23, 2014 in Mt. Pleasant, and received straight first division (Superior) ratings from all 3 judges. Despite being asked to step in and march early due to a power outage, the band rose to the occasion and performed a very difficult, crowd-pleasing drill. Judge Charles Trayler, from West Texas, commented, "Indeed, it was my pleasure [to watch]. Would you please consider doing it again?"

The Pine Tree band is gaining some attention this year due to a unique style. The music selections were of a more classical nature, featuring the work of Gustav Holst. The use of colorguard, majorettes, and a feature twirler added visual interest to the fine work of the band. Mark Melton, Director of Fine Arts at Pine Tree ISD, says the marching style is, "a blending of traditional military style with some of the best elements of corps style." Judge Ross Grant commented that the show was, "a really interesting and challenging blend of 6 to 5 marching with a very hard, non-traditional march." Dr. Grant also wrote a large BRAVO! on the comment sheet. Melton, who is in his 32nd year of teaching, believes that the band should remain true to its tradition of excellence, yet continue to be innovative in order to be competitive at the State level. "Above all," Melton continues, "our primary responsibility as a band will continue to be to entertain our Friday night fans."

TINY GIRL BIG DREAM

Acacia Riddle is a tiny girl with a big     dream.  Acacia was guest speaker at the Pine Tree Junior High on October 24.

Acacia is founder of Tiny Girl, Big Dream.

The Mission of Tiny Girl, Big Dream, Inc. is to provide resources to children of all ages and walks of life, so they can learn to work together to solve the tremendous challenges facing them today, and prepare for a brilliant and vibrant tomorrow.

The Mission of Tiny Girl, Big Dream comes from the life of a tiny girl, a girl who was born of magic. A girl without complete arms who, despite her differences, or perhaps because of them, intuitively knows what it feels like to be left out, not to be part of the "normal" group. Every child, indeed, every person, understands that feeling, having felt it many, many times in their lives. But few have the big dream Acacia Riddle has.

One tiny girl has the courage of many and a big dream of making a difference for children by speaking out and providing others with a means of expressing themselves without words- The Friendship Bench.

Acacia's dream is to place friendship kits into every school across the United States and spread friendship around the country and around the world. She believes that if we can begin to put the spotlight on all of the goodness, random acts of kindness, and yes, friendship, then we will begin to see a brighter more vibrant world. A world where kindness, compassion, and humanity are recognized, appreciated and rewarded. A world where acts of violence are replaced by acts of kindness.

A Friendship bench donated by Manly's Furniture  is now placed in the foyer at Pine Tree Junior High for all the students to enjoy.

ANCHOR ACADEMY
First year teachers learn about using IPad applications in the classroom during their regular Anchor Academy Session on October 28. Nicolle Davis modeled how to use the IPad during a reading lesson where she read Hallo-Weiner and allowed the teachers to demonstrate their artistic renderings of the descriptors heard in the story.
