Vermont Students Spearhead Wellness Fair in Colchester
The Colchester School District had hosted a Community Wellness Fair at the local high school for the past two years, but the turnout was not what they had hoped for. They turned to the students on the ACPHS Vermont Campus to organize this year's event, and the decision proved to be a good one. There were more than 200 people who attended the Fair on October 23, and the number of participating vendors increased from 10 last year to 25 this year. Alicia Jacobs, a physician at Colchester Family Medicine and one of the event founders, said of the students' contributions, "They have done it all. They have been unbelievable. They plan to continue it, which is great for the town." Click here to read an article about the event from the Colchester Sun.
Infectious Diseases Faculty Earn Awards for their Research
Associate Professor Tom Lodise (top) and Assistant Professor Nimish Patel were each recognized for their research accomplishments by the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP). Dr. Lodise received the organization's "Pharmacotherapy Paper of the Year Award" for his paper titled, "Vancomycin Exposure in Patients With MRSA Bloodstream Infections: How Much Is Enough?" The article was published in the July 16, 2014 edition of Clinical Infectious Diseases. Dr. Patel was named the SIDP's "Young Investigator of the Year." He is the third ACPHS faculty member since 2007 to receive this award (Dr. Lodise and Professor Amit Pai are the others). Click here to read the press release.
Dr. Polimeni Receives Grant to Oversee Housing Study
Associate Professor John Polimeni has received a grant from the Schenectady Foundation for implementation of a Sustainable Housing Study. The study seeks to determine the effect of transient and substandard housing on areas such as academic performance, health, and job retention. It is the first study of its kind to be implemented in Schenectady. Dr. Polimeni will oversee the program in partnership with the Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority and Better Neighborhoods, Inc. ACPHS students will also assist in the study by collecting survey data. Click the following link to read the Times Union article about the initiative.
Colleges Against Cancer Chapter Named "Leader of Hope"
Each year the American Cancer Society recognizes Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) chapters who do exemplary work with the "Leader of Hope" award. The ACPHS chapter of CAC was recently named a 2015 Leader of Hope, marking the third time in five years they have been so honored. Of the 450 CAC chapters in the country, just 28 were named Leaders of Hope this year. Among its 2015 accomplishments, CAC raised $51,967 through Relay for Life, which was the highest total in the school's history and the third highest (per capita) of any college in the country last year!
Soccer Teams Earn Invites to National Championships
For the first time ever, both the men's and women's soccer teams have earned invitations to the USCAA National Tournament in Asheville, NC, in the same season. The women's team is seeded #2, while the men's team is seeded sixth. This marks the fourth year that the women have made an appearance in the National Tournament, with this being their highest seed ever. Both teams will play their first games on Thursday, November 5. The women will face the winner of #7 Southern Maine Community College and #10 Carlow University at 11:30 am. The men will face #3 seed Florida College at 2:00 pm. Visit the USCAA website to watch a live stream of the games.
Fine Print
Isn't it a bit odd that parents spend most of their waking lives telling children to avoid taking candy from strangers, yet Halloween is pretty much built upon this very premise and no one seems to mind?
