First Day of Classes

Life isn't always fair, especially if you're a sports fan. How else do you explain the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, Kentucky Derby, NFL Draft, and Yankees-Red Sox series landing on the weekend before final exams? On top of that, this is the last e-Pulse of the year, which either adds insult to injury or offers a silver lining.

Inaugural ACPHS Giving Day Surpasses Goal of 200 Donors

Giving Day 4-30-15

The first-ever ACPHS Giving Day - a one-day fundraising effort to support the people and programs of ACPHS - surpassed its goal by receiving 208 donations in a 24-hour period. Giving Day Headquarters in Albany and Vermont served as the home base for activities, attracting a steady stream of visitors and supporters throughout the day. Volunteers helped answer phones, write thank you notes, and assist with online donations. When the dust settled at 11:59 pm on April 30, alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the College had come together virtually and in person to raise more than $28,000! Thank you to everyone who participated!

"Reflection Room" Expands its Book Collection Courtesy of the Anderson Family

Assistant Professor Jim Anderson was a former Teacher of the Year who taught philosophy and religion at the College for nearly two decades. Shortly before his passing in July 2014,  the College dedicated the "Reflection Room" (located in the Panther's Den) in his name. Earlier this month, members of Jim's family came to campus to see the space for the first time. They were so moved by the visit that they have decided to add some of Jim's favorite books to the room's collection. Among the titles being donated by the family are "Readings for Meditation and Reflection" by C.S. Lewis and "A Cry For Mercy" by Henri Nouwen.

Professor Balaz Participates in STEM Education Panel

Stefan Balaz, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences on the Vermont Campus, served as a panelist at a recent event hosted by the Vermont Biosciences Alliance. Titled "STEM Saves Lives and Creates Jobs," the event brought together policymakers, academics, business community members, and researchers to share their perspectives on the importance of a 21st century STEM workforce. Dr. Balaz was joined on the panel by representatives from the University of Vermont, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), and the CEO from a food allergen testing laboratory. Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin delivered the opening remarks at the event.

Banquet Recognizes the Best in ACPHS Athletics

The ACPHS Athletic Department held its annual banquet celebrating individual and team achievements from the past season. Among the night's honorees were Gavin O'Brien, who captured the ACPHS Athletics Academic Achievement Award; Sarah Cope, who received the Panther Award for displaying outstanding leadership, commitment, and dedication to ACPHS Athletics; and Matthew Calnan (pictured here), who was honored with the William Cronin Athletic Award for demonstrated leadership and hard work. The evening concluded with the presentation of the ACPHS Athletic Service Award to retiring Provost John Denio. Provost Denio coached both basketball and soccer over the course of his 39 years at the College.

Fine Print

With this being our last issue of the year, some have asked what the e-Pulse staff will do over the summer break. At this point, it looks like most our time will be spent nannying for Princess Charlotte, but we'll also be exploring ideas to improve the newsletter (if such a thing is even possible!). Until we meet again ...
