July 2013
We're off to a great new fiscal year, enjoying the summer, and already looking ahead to fall.

Over the last few months we've seen a number of alumni, either back on campus or while we were on the road. Thank you to everyone who has supported the College or made a trip back. If you have not visited campus or connected with your classmates in a while, mark your calendars and consider joining us at the following events:

Saratoga Polo (Friday, August 9)
Saratoga Race Course (Saturday, August 17)
Health and Wellness Expo (Saturday, September 28)
Reunion Weekend 2014 (Friday, June 6 - Sunday, June 8)

I would like to take the opportunity to also thank our Director of Athletics and Recreation, Ryan Venter for 10 years of service and dedication to the students and our campus community. Ryan recently accepted an opportunity with the Capital District YMCA.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Regards,

Bill Jabour

Faculty Member and Pharmacy Research Institute at ACPHS Receive Research Grant

Dr. Meenakshi Malik, Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Basic and Social Sciences, has received a three-year research grant from the National Institutes of Health (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) for $465,000.

The focus of Dr. Malik's research will be Francisella tularensis, a potentially deadly bacteria that has been classified by the Centers for Disease Control as a Category A bioterrorism agent. Organisms in this class are defined as "high-priority agents that pose a risk to national security." Other Category A agents include anthrax, plague, and smallpox.

Dr. Malik will specifically be seeking to understand how Francisella represses the body's innate immune response in the first 72 hours following infection. If this process can be better understood, the ability to develop a preventive vaccine will be greatly enhanced.
