President Gozzo to Step Down as Head of the College in June 2014
ACPHS President James Gozzo recently announced that he will be stepping down as president of the College, effective June 30, 2014. Hired as the seventh president/dean of the school in 1998, Dr. Gozzo has led ACPHS through a period of unprecedented growth and expansion, including the construction or acquisition of seven buildings on the Albany Campus, the establishment of the Vermont Campus, and the addition of ten new bachelor's and graduate programs. A national search will be conducted for his replacement.
Student and Faculty Speakers Named for Commencement Ceremonies
While the featured speakers for the Albany and Vermont Commencement ceremonies were announced in March (Class of '63 alumus Dick Daffner
in Albany and U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy
in Vermont), the student and faculty speakers were determined last week. Student Sarah DeRuosi (top) and faculty member Andy Flynn (Class of '87 alumnus) will do the honors on the Albany Campus. In Vermont, student Christine Skrzypiec (bottom) and faculty member Sommer Zarbock will address the first graduates of the Vermont Campus. The student and faculty speakers were selected based on nominations from members of the graduating class.
College Receives National Honor for Community Service
ACPHS has been named to the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This prestigious designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. In fact, ACPHS was further distinguished by being awarded "honor roll with distinction" status. The students and faculty of the College have displayed a long history of community service through initiatives such as the Health Expo, ACPHS Academy, High School Summer Research Program, and countless other activities in support of a wide range of charitable organizations.
Athletics Banquet Honors Student Athletes Past and Present
The ACPHS Athletics banquet was held on Sunday, April 21 before a packed house of student athletes, coaches, alumni, family members, and others from the college community. The annual event honors the teams and individual achievements from the past season.
Highlights from this year's event included the induction of three new members into the ACPHS Hall of Fame: Kylie Jordan '05, Kevin Mocerine '06 (pictured left), and Jason Howard '08 (pictured right). For more information visit www.acphsathletics.com.
Cytotechnology and CLS Students Receive Their White Coats
Three members of the Cytechnology program and seven members of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) program received their white coats at a ceremony held recently in the Student Center. Bhumika Bhalani, Michele Plowinske, and TaKarra Victor were recognized from the Cytotechnology program. Jonathon Ash, Kerri Burton, Nicholas Dresser, Brittney Mancinelli, Connor McDonald, Dorothy Sisto, and Anthony Tamburello represented the CLS program. As with Pharm.D. students, the white coat ceremony symbolizes the transition from a student to a professional.
Large Turnout of Alumni, Students and Faculty at Pharmacy Legislative Day
Forty ACPHS students and nine faculty members visited the Legislative Office Building in Albany on April 16 to meet with state legislators and discuss issues of importance to pharmacists and patients. During the course of the day, groups of 4-6 students (along with one or two faculty members) would meet with senators or assembly members to talk about subjects such as pharmacy education and training, and the expansion of laws related to immunizations. Each of New York's seven pharmacy programs sent representations of students and faculty, but none of them had more participants than ACPHS!
