Fulford Olympics
|
Cold weather, rain, ice and slush wouldn't stop the Fulford students from a 'heated' debate! With mother nature putting a kink in outdoor skating plans, the students gathered in the Great Room for a Survival Simulation conversation activity.
The students organized themselves in groups consisting of members from their respective houses. They were given a scenerio - being stranded on a deserted island - and a list of items in which they were to rank based on importance for their survival. Some of the items on the list included: a magnifying glass, a compass, a pen and paper, a tent, and even Justin Beiber!
The students carried out conversations amongst themselves to create a top 8 list and to compose reasons for each of their choices. Once all the groups were finished, the residential advisors went around the room asking what the groups had selected as their most valuable items. Surprisingly, a group chose Justin Beiber as their #1 choice, explaining quite conceivably that if Justin was stranded on an island with them, his presence would probably help to encourage a more extensive search party. Rather NOT surprisingly, Justin also landed on the bottom of some group's lists for reasons that are probably obvious!
Overall the students were engaged and offered up thoughtful explanations behind their choices and enjoyed the activity and even more likely, the idea of living on an island on this gloomy Winter's day.

Cirque du Soleil
|
On Saturday January 18th a group from Fulford Academy visited the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ontario for a field trip to see the renowned Cirque du Soleil "Varekai" show. This human-only circus is well known for its amazing acrobatics and choreography, as well as its beautiful sets, costumes, and live music.
Our group of girls was very excited to see the show. For some of the group it was their first time seeing a Cirque du Soleil performance, whereas others had seen several of the company's many shows. In order to get into the experience many of the girls indulged with snacks such as soda and popcorn.
Along with the students, we were also joined by Suzan and Doug Kendall and Dagmar Urbahn-Schiefer.
Unanimously the students loved the show. When asked what their favourite part was, most of the girls answered that they most enjoyed an act involving a male acrobat who used a net hanging from the ceiling to perform amazing tricks. They also commented that they loved the crazy, colourful costumes that made the performers look like different magical forest creatures.

Chinese New Year - Year of the Horse
|
On January 31st, Fulford Academy students celebrated Lunar Year of Horse (also called Chinese New Year ) with their teachers and staff. More than 12 cuisines were prepared by Fulford staff Alice Wang and Lydia Jao.
The authentic food at our dinner buffet was not only Chinese, but there was also typical oriental food that represented different countries, such as dumplings, Vietnamese-style spring rolls, glutinous rice cake with Kimchi, Chinese green with dried mushrooms, Ma Po Tofu, Taiwan style rice with sausage & bacon and also Thai purple gruel with coconut milk.
Some students had a fun time participating in making dumplings and spring rolls. Our talented Chinese student Ruhao Ma, who is an outstanding calligrapher and artist, wrote a couplet in Chinese to decorate the door - a very traditional way to celebrate Chinese New Year. The couplet is from a poem that has everything to do with Horse which stands for the Year of Horse.
Students also hung colored lanterns to add more holiday atmosphere. Each student had also received a Red Envelope with money in it, meaning all the good wishes from adults (parents). It is another tradition that every child is yearning for during Chinese New Year.
After the big dinner, some of the students went to watch "Journey To The West", a movie specially ordered for International students by Upper Canada District School Board.

Overnight Ski Trip
|
Skiing was AWESOME! On February 1st and 2nd, Fulford hit the slopes at St. Sauveur in the beautiful province of Quebec. We skied and snowboarded all afternoon and into the night on Saturday. That night we stayed in cozy cabins at the bottom of the resort. After a hearty breakfast of cereals, fruit, and pastries, we headed out to enjoy another day of skiing and snowboarding.
The students and staff had a great time and managed to stay warm! Some even took snowboarding lessons and were soon out on the hills practicing their new skills! Overall it was a fun trip, with all of the students exhausted by the drive home on Sunday!

Spirit Week
| Once again, students and staff showed how much school spirit we have during Spirit Week in February. On Monday, February 10th, everyone dressed in their house colours: blue for Jones House, yellow for Fraser House, red for Beatty House and green for Green House. The staff even decided to have their own "house colours" and dressed in purple and black. In the end, Fraser house won for Best Dressed.
On Tuesday, everyone put on their ugliest and loudest outfit. There were some great outfits from both the staff and students, but Eileen and Ruhao had the best outfits for the students and Ms. Edgley, Dr. Steel and Mrs. Lee had the best outfits for the staff.
On Wednesday, the entire school was walking around in their pajamas and wearing slippers for Pajama Day. Some even brought their stuffed animals to complete the outfit.
Fulford celebrated Valentine's Day a bit early and everyone wore as much red, pink and white as they could find. Mr. Murray and Mrs. Renner were the Best Dressed staff members. On Friday, the whole school went skiing at Calabogie Peaks Ski Resort. Students got to try cross-country skiing, snowboarding, tubing and downhill skiing. Friday started off a bit cold and snowy, but by the time we got to the hill it was great weather and everyone enjoyed themselves. It was a great way to end a spirit-filled week at Fulford. You can see more great photos from Spirit Week on Flickr.

National Basketball League Game
|
On Saturday February 15, 2014 students had the great opportunity to go to a basketball game in Canada's newly found National Basketball League. The students travelled to Canada's capital city, Ottawa to take in an amazing game between the Ottawa Skyhawks and the London Lightning. Sitting courtside we were able to see a highly entertaining, action packed game that was decided in the last few seconds. Much to the excitement of the students the Skyhawks were victorious by a score of 104-99!

We watched skating numbers from Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, Mulan, Toy Story, Cinderella, the Little Mermaid, Lion King, and many more. The students had a great time, enjoyed some delicious treats and bought some cute souvenirs!

Gummi Bear Candy Osmosis Science
|
The ESL Foundations science class has been learning how things get in and out of cells. One of the groups decided to make a model of this situation. Instead of using real cells, they used gummi bear candies to show how water moved into and out of cells through the process of osmosis.
First, the question, "What happens when you put gummi bear candy into fresh water? What happens when you put gummi bear candy into salty water?" The class made several hypotheses: nothing would happen, all of the candies would get bigger, all of the candies would get smaller, or some combination of these things would happen.
The students carefully weighed and measured 2 gummi bear candies of each colour. They placed one candy of each colour in fresh water, and one candy of each colour in salty water. They left the candies overnight.
You can observe the results! The yellow gummi bear candy shows the size of the candy at the beginning of the experiment. The red, orange, green and clear gummi bears were in salt water overnight.
Both the candies in fresh water and the candies in salt water got bigger. However, the candies in the fresh water were bigger than the candies in salt water. The students carefully measured and weighed the candies again at the end of the experiment. In fresh water, each candy gained about 6 g of water. In salt water, each candy gained about 4 g of water.

Calabogie Peaks Ski Resort
|
Rise and Shine! Fourteen Fulford students and three supervisors woke before the sun on Saturday, March 1st to head to Calabogie Peaks Ski Resort for a day on the slopes. Our commute to the hill was slow. Students enjoyed watching Star Wars, playing games and sleeping on the long ride there. After two and a half hours, students were eager to stretch their legs and get off the bus.
Upon arrival, students were quick to head to the rental shop to grab their skis and snowboards and get on the hill. After gearing up with skis or boards, helmets and poles, students paired up and hit the slopes.
Most of our students stuck with the familiar and were able to join some friends on the slopes. Two students decided to test their limits and try snowboarding for the first time! They both tried hard to learn stops and turns throughout their lesson with an instructor. Great job Miguel and Jane!
After five warm, sunny hours on the slopes, students were happy to slow the pace, take a photo to remember our day, and load the bus to head back to Fulford. Within 10kms from the hill, most students were sound asleep!
