Presenting our Partnership Schools
|
It is the time of the year where we start our application process with our students. Our admissions department has been in touch with most of our families already and also spoke to each student already to start the process.
Part of the process is welcoming our partner schools to Fulford Academy for presentations and also taking students to see their campus' if they are interested in applying to them. Currently, we have scheduled visits to the following schools: Trinity College School, Lakefield College School, Ashbury College, Ridley College and Appleby College. Please contact johanna.ziegler@fulfordacademy.com if you have any questions about this process.
Applying to boarding schools is very competitive for international students especially when they are applying for grade 11. However, our team will be working one-on-one with students to ensure that their application packages are as strong as possible, as well as discussing alternative options.
In the past, we have been successful in placing our students at the right boarding schools if they were ready for the new challenge. Most of our families/students have already communicated their schools of interest. We encourage students to choose 2-3 schools which they will apply to and we will help them to get the applications ready and out before Christmas. Mrs. Ziegler and Mrs. Kendall will be in touch with you about the details. Please don't hesitate to send us an email if you have questions at any point.

March Break 2014
| We know that March Break seems far away, but for students joining us on the American three-city tour of Boston, New York City and Washington, DC we will be starting to apply for United States visas shortly. This will require certain documentation from families/agents, who will be contacted by the admissions staff with details.
In advance, we appreciate your cooperation and timeliness with this matter. This trip promises to be one of the highlights of 2014.

Fall Orientation
| With a new school year we looked forward to the arrival of our new students. They were filled with curiosity, excitement and of course a bit of nervousness. At Fulford, during Orientation Day, we try to help all of our students, new and old, to get settled and to feel comfortable here by getting to know the school, our friendly staff and their classmates.
Students were introduced to their teachers and staff and shown around Fulford Academy. The students also played "get to know you" games like "Blanket Volleyball" and "Human Knot" during the afternoon. In the evening, students went for a tour of Brockville and were able to pick up any necessary items they might need for their classes on Wednesday.

Ottawa Parliament
|
We kicked off our 2013-2014 school year with a great trip to Ottawa. Despite the dreary Ottawa weather, 34 students and 4 Residential Advisor's loaded a bus to explore two Ottawa tourist attractions; the Parliament Building and the Aviation Museum.
We started our day at Parliament hill, where we participated in a guided tour of the Parliament building. The favourite part of the visit was of the library. After our tour, we hopped back on the bus and headed to the Museum of Aviation.
After finishing our tours, we were back on the bus; it was not long before the 34 students were sound asleep!
You can see pictures and read more about our trip to Ottawa on our blog.

House Crests
| As Fulford Academy tradition dictates, we spent our first Fulford Olympic Games afternoon creating house crests. Each of our four houses: Beatty, Fraser, Green, and, Jones, worked on designing and then painting a crest that would represent them as a group for the year to follow. These crests are hanging in the dining hall proudly, where we assemble for each meal daily.
Jones was the winner of the house crest challenge as they incorporated an element from each country that a student is from. View the other three house flags on our blog.

Apple Picking
| What better way to spend a warm fall day than apple picking; which is exactly what our students did on Saturday, September 14th. We visited Hall's Apple Market, a local family owned farm that has 80 acres of orchard and 29 varieties of apples. The students went out into the orchard and picked three bushels of apples for the staff and students at Fulford to enjoy!
After apple picking some students played on the nearby playground, while others sampled the Apple Market's apples, apple cider, apple pie, apple butter, and other delicious apple treats! You can view more photos of their time picking apples online.

My favourite part was that you had the opportunity to choose your own apples, which I wanted to eat. They were red and juicy! I also tried the sparkling apple cider. - Ksenia Varenova, Student

Terry Fox Run
| On Sunday September 15th, Fulford Academy students took part in a Brockville and Canadian tradition; one that has been alive for 33 years - The Terry Fox Run. This run happens throughout Canada every year to raise money for Cancer research and Fulford Academy is a proud supporter of this event. With our whole school taking part on Sunday, students chose to either run or walk the 5 km in support of raising money towards this important cause. The event provided Fulford Academy students with the opportunity to enjoy an outdoor activity with the community. Many students donated money for the chance to have their faces painted for the walk/run. Students seemed to enjoy the opportunity of being outside, exercising and spending some time with their friends. Overall, the event was a success with every Fulford Academy student participating and completing the circuit. The school is happy to have contributed to such an important cause and Canadian tradition. Fulford Academy's participation helped both, raise money for this event as well as brought awareness to our students regarding the purpose of the run. - Jeff Osler, Residential Advisor

Mid-Autumn Festival
| Mid-Autumn Day is a Chinese traditional festival. It is one of the important festivals in China. On this day the moon will be the biggest and most bright of the year. On this day, family members will have dinner together. In China it is called, "family reunion dinner". At night we will sit together under the moon, and eat moon cakes. We buy lanterns for this festival. It is one of the symbols and a decoration. Different places have different ways to celebrate; in my hometown we always visit friends and relatives.

Fulford Olympics
| On September 22nd, we held our first Olympics competition of the year. The students are placed into four teams or as we call them houses. They are Fraser House, Green House, Beatty House and Jones House. We started off with a tug-of-war contest between the houses. Jones was able to show their strength and defeat all challengers as they went on to win the first competition of the year. For our next two sports we had the houses play ultimate Frisbee and ball hockey. Each sport gave the teams a chance to show some real team work to try and come together and emerge triumphant. After our fun was done we all got to cool down with some fresh fruit and some nice cold freezees. Chinese National Day
| Oct 1st is Chinese National Day. At the Tunnel Bay of Brockville, the Chinese national flag was raised from September 30 to October 6th 2013.
The event to raising national flags on its ethnic national day has been practiced for years in the city Brockville. It is originally initiated by Brockville and The District Multicultural Council and approved by local government. This is a symbolic proof from the city of Brockville that shows recognition of the different cultures as well as respecting the contributions to Brockville by residents who are from different parts of the world. Oct. 1st 2013, is the 64th anniversary of The People's Republic of China. Leading by the school's owner, Suzan Kendall, students of Fulford Academy paid a visit to Tunnel Bay where the Chinese national flag was raised and some pictures were taken! As a Chinese-born Canadian, I am so proud of living in this country and enjoying the freedom to retain my own culture and tradition while integrating to Canadian culture and social activities at the same time. I appreciate so much of what our school has performed. Thank you city of Brockville! Thank you Fulford Academy! - Alice Wang, Supervisor and Night Mom of School Residence

Overnight Toronto Trip
| On Saturday, October 5th, we started the weekend by visiting Canada's Wonderland in the morning for a full day of rides, games, tasty snacks adventures and screams. Most students and supervisors did not hesitate to jump right onto the biggest and scariest roller coaster there, the Leviathan.
Later that evening, we headed to the Medieval Times restaurant for dinner and a show. The students were quickly intrigued as crowns were placed on their heads to identify their village and the Knights that would be battling for their honour. Two of our students were lucky enough to receive a flower from our Yellow Knight. Unfortunately, our knight did not win, but we all enjoyed our evening and left with full bellies and sore throats from cheering.
On Sunday, we visited the CN Tower, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. After our visit to the tower, students got to shop at the Eaton Centre and by early afternoon we were headed back to Fulford Academy.

Thanksgiving Weekend
|
On the weekend of October 12 -14, Fulford Academy students, along with the rest of Canada, celebrated Thanksgiving. It was a beautiful autumn weekend, and many students took advantage of the lovely weather and spent time outside.
On Saturday, the students walked from Fulford Academy to a nearby school to take part in a Brockville tradition - the Brockville Bowl. The Bowl is a football match between two local high school teams. Fulford had the chance to cheer on three of its own students who play on the Brockville Collegiate Institute (BCI) team. While BCI suffered a loss, it was a great day to sit on the grass and enjoy some Thanksgiving sunshine.
Sunday brought some rain, but that did not stop the students from participating in a Thanksgiving scavenger hunt. They wandered the school and its grounds looking for pumpkins, leaves, scarecrows, gourds and other autumn related items.
On holiday Monday, the students had time to reflect on what they were thankful for and write a few notes to put on our "What are you thankful for?" wall. Students were thankful for friends, family, and the fun times they have had Fulford Academy!

Professional Football Game in Montreal
|
On October 22nd, I took 10 students to the Montreal Allouettes vs. Hamilton Tiger Cats game in Montreal. Students woke up early to eat breakfast before getting into the van to start our two and half hour drive to downtown Montreal.
We arrived an hour before the game which allowed students to explore what a professional sporting event had to offer. After loading up on hot dogs and popcorn, students settled to watch the grand opening of the game. Students were impressed by the bands marching to start the game as well as the Canadian cheerleaders in sweaters and sweatpants! Students watched on the big screen where the school was welcomed to the game - cool to see.

Pumpkin Carving
| In preparation for Halloween, our students carved pumpkins on Sunday, October 27th. The students had previously chosen their own pumpkins when they went pumpkin picking a few weekends ago at Tincap Berry Farm.
Our students were not hesitant to get right in and scoop the guts out of the pumpkins.
After cleaning out their pumpkins, the students' creativity was flowing. We ended up with a wide variety of pumpkin designs - everything from traditional pumpkin faces to angry birds!

Halloween
|
This past Thursday, October 31st, we celebrated Halloween. Many cultures have similar festivals and customs to our version of Halloween. . In Canada, Halloween basically means two things, one, people dress up in funny or scary costumes and two, people, especially children, go to neighbours' houses where they are given candy (this is called Trick or Treating). At Fulford, students were given the opportunity to try Trick or Treating, one of the favourite activities of Canadian students.
During the day, staff and students dressed up in some great costumes. Vinnie won a prize for the best dressed staff member and a boy and girl won for the following categories:
- the funniest costume - Shirley and the colourful trio of Ruhao, Ziren and John
- the scariest costume - Anya and Miguel
- the cutest costume - Ivana and Hyun Key
- and the most original costume - Eileen and Hiromu
Fulford Academy also hosted a haunted house for children within our community. We set up several different activities and games that the children were able to play and try before getting some delicious candy. It offered the Fulford students a great chance to interact with the public while getting a taste of some true Canadian culture. Everyone had a great time having fun dressing up while getting to eat lots of candy. View more of our great Halloween photos, taken by Eileen, a student at Fulford Academy, on Flickr. Trip to China
|
First off, I would like to say how thankful I was to be able to go on the trip to China with Fulford Academy to represent Canadian Students. I love to travel and learn about different cultures, which I was able to go on this trip along with Dr. Steel and his wife Beth, Doug Kendall and fellow students Aaron Brecht, Andrew Kravchenko and Hannah Zhao where we would meet up with Mrs. Kendall who was already in China. While in China we were privileged to be able to visit area schools, like Greentown and Yuyao.
While at the schools, we celebrated their 20th anniversary and the 10th annual International Festival. We joined some of their classes and participated in different activities around the schools. Activities included a Chinese market put on by students, and a "snack street" where we were able to try different traditional Chinese foods. At the schools, Hannah, Aaron and I were able to attend a Model U.N. Seminar; it was very enlightening on different issues around the world.
We had such an awesome visit to the schools. On our second half of the trip we were able to tour many extraordinary places around Beijing such as the Great Wall of China, the Temple of Heaven and the Forbidden City just to name a few. We were even able to see an amazing Kung Fu show. View more great photos from our trip!

Movember
|
It is that time of year again when the male staff and students at Fulford Academy are sporting a little more facial hair than usual. "Movember" is an annual month-long event in November which involves growing mustaches to raise awareness of men's health issues.
Like last year, we have set up an in-house "Movember" fundraising plan to make a donation at the end of the month that goes to charities about men's health issues. To keep "Movember" fun for staff and students, we have created incentives for each dollar amount they raise. Just to name a few of the incentives, if the students reach over $100.00 they each get a chocolate bar and if they raise $600.00, staff members get pied in the face by some of the students.
If you would like to contribute to our "Movember" fundraising efforts, please join in by donating to this worthy cause at http://mobro.co/fulfordacademy.
