Message from Head of School
|
Another year - gone in an instant.
It is one of the great truisms of life that time is precious. We all fight for more time to achieve the goals we set for ourselves, and always time flies by leaving us to wonder how so much time has passed. Another year has gone by for us at Fulford Academy. A year filled with many wonderful experiences that were shared by the students and staff. The memories of this time will last forever and will resonate through the lives of the staff and the students. That time can pass so quickly, yet provide so many wonderful memories is always a puzzle to me.
As we find ourselves at the end of another school year, the time has run out to help our students grow and develop - but they are ready! This year's group of graduates have achieved the greatest average increase in English language proficiency that we have ever seen and it has been an honour to be involved with this wonderful group of young people. We had much to celebrate in our closing ceremonies, yet there were many deserving students whose significant academic and social achievements that could not be recognized with an award. To everyone I say congratulations and best wishes for your future studies.
The level of language and academic achievement was illustrated in the very well presented student speeches at the graduation ceremonies. These wonderful speeches were also a testament to the close relationships created between the individual members of our diverse international community.
Friendships ran deep in this year's class, and the goodbyes were heartfelt and difficult for us to watch without ourselves shedding a tear. It is amazing to see just how long it takes a student to walk the last few steps out of the front door; this year there were lingering farewells to friends and staff members.
I would like to thank all of our parents, agents, students and all stakeholders for their contributions to Fulford Academy's success in this wonderful year. Have a fantastic summer!
Kindest wishes,
Dr. Tom Steel

La Ronde
|
On Saturday, June 1st, most of our students went to La Ronde, a Six Flags amusement park in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Our students had a great time riding roller coasters and playing midway games. The Ednor-l'Attaque roller coaster was a big favourite! We could not have asked for better weather as it was a typical summer day - hot and humid. The students stayed cool with the park's water ride, Splash, and the sprinklers throughout the park.

Hoops for Heart
| The staff and students of Fulford Academy and Fulford Preparatory College participated in Hoops for Heart on June 5th here at the school. The students were divided into their houses - Fraser, Beatty, Jones and Green - and played three different activities. One activity was a game of basketball, the second activity was a Frisbee toss and the third was a basketball shoot.
The basketball court was full of action and friendly competition between the houses throughout Hoops for Heart, but the excitement grew when there was a staff vs. student basketball game at the end of the day. Each team played their best and everyone watching got to see a great game. Check out our photos from Hoops for Heart online.

Baby Shower for Mrs. Ballantyne
|
On Wednesday June 5th, the students and staff all had a surprise baby shower for one of our teachers, Mrs. Ballantyne. The students helped set everything up and made decorations and signs for the event. Some students even helped to wrap all of the presents.
We started off the event with a few games. In the first game we had everyone take a clothes pin and if you were caught saying the word 'baby' anyone could take your pin away. The player with the most pins at the end of the shower won a prize. The second game was 'Guess the animal baby name'. We had a list of animals and everyone had to write down the baby animals name for each. The players with the most correct answers won a prize. The last game we had was 'Guess the baby toy/object'. There were 10 brown paper bags, numbered 1-10, and they were passed around and everyone had to feel what was inside. The players with the most correct answers won a prize.
After all of the fun games we had cake and Mrs. Ballantyne opened up her gifts. Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves and the cake was delicious! You can find more photos from the baby shower on our Facebook Page.

Calypso Waterpark
|
On Saturday June 8th, Fulford Academy took a group of students to Calypso Waterpark just outside of Ottawa. It was a cloudy and slightly cold day at first which made for a slow start, however once our students saw how there was absolutely no waiting time for any ride in the whole park things started to perk up.
The very steep angle "Fast Track", the extremely fast "Vertigo" slide and "AquaLoops" ride were very popular.
Many of our students were seen enjoying the same ride over and over again due to the lack of lines and one or two of our students managed to try every single ride in the entire park! At the end of the day our group agreed that it is a great field trip, but we need to figure out how to keep the lines short and add a bit more sunshine.

Car Wash at Fulford Academy
|
On Saturday June 8th, Fulford staff and students hosted a car wash at the school. The purpose of the car wash was to raise money for a local soup kitchen and local charities. The soup kitchen prepares lunch and dinner five days a week for disadvantaged members of our community. The car wash went well and the weather was nice and we washed many cars. More information about the soup kitchen can be found on their website.

On June 8th, the day was a little bit cloudy, but we were lucky that still some people came. It's a lot of people's first time washing cars. Different experience. All the money donated to the local food bank, loaves and fishes and heart and stroke!

Talent Night
|
Fulford Academy hosted their first Talent Night on Friday, June 14th. To start the night off, the Grade 9a and 9b music class performed a song that they had been preparing for throughout their class. Next we had a duet sung by Aude-Marie Ackebo and Ksenia Varenova which had people dancing in their seats. Jingwen (Jessica) Muo bravely followed the duet and sang two songs.
To change things up a bit, we had a dance routine performed by Ksenia Varenova, Akina Ishiwatari and Shelley Weaver (a Residential Advisor at Fulford Academy and dance instructor here in Brockville). To finish off the night, the Grade 9a and 9b class performed one more song.
Our first Talent Night at Fulford Academy was a great way to start off what we hope will be an annual event. It was great to see the students have the courage to stand up a demonstrate their talent in front of their peers and I cannot wait until our next Talent Night to see more of our talented students at Fulford. More photos are available online.

Boat Cruise on a Tall Ship
|

To mark the bicentennial of the War of 1812 between America and the British Empire which ended in 1814, Brockville had a Tall Ship festival. Tall Ships are ships with at least one tall mast that harnesses the power of the wind to direct and move the ship. We were lucky enough to go for a ride and experience what it would have been like to sail one hundred years ago.
The crew of the ship were very entertaining with their humour and amazing skill in all the hard work they had to perform to sail the ship. It was a great way to spend the last Sunday together before the summer break.

Graduation Ceremony
| It was a perfect day for our Spring Graduation Ceremonies that were celebrated on Friday, June 21st. With much fanfare, 53 students from 12 different countries received their academic certificates, awards and accolades. Staff, teachers and parents were treated to speeches (in English of course!) from 5 of our exceptional students and the achievements of all of our students were well recognized.
This year's award winners were as follows: The Kendall Cup recipient was Ting Kao, the Williams Award recipient was Jeffrey Au, the Faculty award went to Ann Wu, the Fulford Cup winner was Khaled Almuhaidib, and the BCI Award was presented to Sinan Celikkol.
There was a three way tie for the Student Award being presented to Khaled Almuhaidib, Haruka Saito and Ting Kao. This year's house leaders were: Haruka Saito and Ting Kao - Fraser, Andy An - Beatty, Khalid Almuhaidib - Jones and Aaron Brecht - Green.
