Heart & Stroke Foundation Fundraising

For the month of April, staff and students of Fulford Academy have been raising funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Students were able to donate money for certain privileges each day, like wearing pajamas to class, no tie day, no room inspection and casual dress days. To make the  fundraising more interesting, Mr. Murray had set goals and if the students raised a certain amount of money something big happened like Mr. Dudgeon shaving his beard and Ms. Edgley dying her hair green.

Together with Fulford Preparatory College, staff and students also paid to participate in the Big Bike Event that took place May 2nd as part of the fundraising. The bike consisted of 29 seats and together they rode the bike around Brockville. Including the Big Bike Event, Fulford Academy has raised $2,144 for the Hearth & Stroke Foundation. More photos are available on our Facebook Page.

This month we have donated for the Heart & Stroke, and the biggest of this month is Big Bike riding. We have a lot of fun while we were doing the big bike. All the people ride together and it's fun because you will really know what is team work.

Easter Weekend

In order to celebrate the Easter holiday, Fulford students enjoyed participating in organized activities. Many students teamed up and some hunted alone for Easter eggs, chocolate and candy which were hidden all over the school as well as outdoors. Each student searched for treats with a colourful Easter basket and at the end of the hunt were awarded based on different criteria. Extra Easter chocolate was given to students based on participating, sharing, encouraging as well as who was able to find the most Easter eggs, or candy, and many more.

The holiday was concluded with a delicious Easter dinner of glazed ham, roasted asparagus, scalloped potatoes and a turkey side dish. View more photos of the students hunting for Easter eggs online.

Hiking at Mac Johnson

On April 6th we all went for a hike at Mac Johnson Wild Life area.  This is an area in Brockville that has a hiking trail that follows around a very large pond in Brockville.  Students were able to get out and go for a nice hike to get some fresh air and some exercise.  Some groups were even lucky enough to see some beavers a staple of Canada and some beautiful swans.  Students were able to take pictures and have an enjoyable walk while talking with friends.  It is always nice to get out in nature and lucky for us in Brockville its right in our own city. Check out more photos from Mac Johnson.

Edgewood Farm

On Saturday April 13th the students of Fulford Academy visited Edgewood Farm to learn all about maple syrup. Maple syrup farming has been part of Ontario's history for over 100 years, producing an average of 2.2 million liters of syrup each year. Edgewood farm is an 18th century farm that now offers a full history lesson through their maple syrup museum. Our students enjoyed spending the afternoon learning all about maple syrup production, seeing the actual extraction of syrup while enjoying an authentic hay ride and even got to indulge their sweet tooth with a variety of maple syrup treats to sample. Many of our students had never tried a piece of maple syrup candy which made the afternoon especially enjoyable. That evening Fulford Academy had a delicious pancake dinner after purchasing four liters of freshly made syrup for our students to enjoy.

Ottawa Hockey Game

On April 20th several Fulford Academy hockey fans watched the Ottawa Senators face off against their rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs, at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa. It was a great game

We arrived at Scotiabank Place just in time for some dinner. Several of the students indulged in some classic Canadian poutine and Tim Horton's beverages.

The venue was loaded with a mix of Ottawa and Toronto fans, adding an intense atmosphere to the sold out arena; even our students' loyalties were divided between the two sides. Haruka and Ting cheered on their beloved Senators with some surprisingly loud, "GO SENS GO!" chants, even though we were seated in a sea of blue-jersey-clan fans. Despite the deep rivalry we even made friends with the Leafs fans seated behind us, and everyone had a blast sharing in the love of the sport.

The game was very exciting and filled with some interesting moments. For example, a "no goal" ruling was issued for the first goal early in the first period, which got everyone on the edge of their seats. Although both teams played well, Toronto was victorious with a 4-1 final.

The field trip was a great hit with the Fulford Academy students. The food, the feud, and the hockey combined to create a memorable experience for our group. They will now look forward to watching each of these teams in the current NHL playoffs.

Fulford Preparatory College students visiting Fulford Academy

Some students from the Fulford College Prep campus in Merrickville came for a visit to the Fulford Academy Brockville campus on April 21.  Students joined in for our Fulford Olympic Games.  We set up a game of ultimate frisbee where each team needs to pass around a frisbee from one end of the field to the other without letting it hit the ground or being caught by another player on the opposite team.  For our second game students attempted to construct the highest tower they could using marshmellows, gummy bears, and tooth picks.  The object was to build the highest standing tower with points also going towards creativity of design.

After the Olympics everyone was treated to a fantastic dinner.  We ended the night off by playing foosball, having a dance contest using the Wii and hanging out making new friends and seeing some old ones.  It was a nice way to end a good weekend.  Even the weather cooperated with us.

Community Clean Up

All of the Fulford Academy students participated in Brockville's annual community cleanup event. Students partnered up received a Community Clean Up t-shirt and used work gloves, garbage bags and rakes. Students took this responsibility seriously and tried their best to remove all of the trash from the baseball diamond in the Fulford Field. Once the Fulford Field was cleaned, the students proceeded to clean up their own mess spread over the four acres of the Fulford Academy property. More photos of the students participating in the community clean up are available online.

Blockhouse Island

It was one of the first beautiful days this year so we took all of the students and went for a long walk. Starting from the school, we headed down King Street to look in all the shops and take in the sunshine. We said hi to lots of folks walking the town and inquiring about where the kids were from. On our way back we followed the walking paths along the St. Lawrence River. Unfortunately the Blockhouse Ice Cream Shop wasn't open for the season yet, but we sure got a stunning view of the waterfront. After reading a few historical signs about sunken ships near our waterway, we were off for the trek back to the school. It was an excellent way to spend a day, enjoying summer - finally!  View more photos of our walk on our Facebook Page.
