A celebration of the seasons through music: The Soloist Among Us The concert will start with Overture of the Season, composed by Jerry Lackey. This piece was commissioned by the family of Garry and JoFran Bendix specifically for the 40th anniversary of the LCSO, and which first premiered during the Nov 17th concert 'Now and Then.' Danielle Belen, winner of the 2008 Sphinx Competition, is an inspiring example for up and coming musicians. Transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts, the Sphinx Competition, held in Detroit, Michigan every year, strives to "encourage, develop and recognize classical music talent in the Black and Latino communities." Belen will be performing the "Summer" movements as a solo violinist in Antonio Vivaldi's Le Quattro Staggioni (The Four Seasons) and Astor Piazzolla's Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires). Also being performed is Igor Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks which will give several of the LCSO musicians solo opportunities. After intermission, the concert will close with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in E minor. The audience will find this a well crafted and colorfully orchestrated symphony. This piece has risen to significance at various points in history, particularly in World War II, as a classical work recognized as a symbol of "ultimate victory through strife", which make this a perfect choice for a concert that honors wellness. |
