A Blast of Virtuous Stuff.

Greetings!

Bringing out the best in our children starts by recognizing teachable moments, seeing every challenge in life as an opportunity to grow. They can be big moments, like when college kids venture off on spring break, the bacchanal of sunburned bodies, margaritas and wet T shirt contests.

Our last "V"mail featured an article, Spring Break as a Teachable Moment, by Hoyt Smith. As a father of three beautiful girls, he knows what it's like to worry and fret, "...seeing danger wherever his daughters see fun." If you missed reading it the first time around, here's another chance.

Teachable moments can also be smaller, more innocent moments, like when a young Cub Scout enters the Pinewood Derby contest. Last year my good friend, Susan, did a Facebook post about how her son, Michael, was participating in the derby. I asked her to share his experience with The "V" Channel. Michael is such a cute kid, and her email to me was so inspiring. It was the perfect opportunity to do a video blog on Purposefulness.

A mother emails The "V" Channel about how her son learned the virtue of Purposefulness.

Kids have a long, and at times, difficult journey ahead of them. From the time they learn to tie their own shoes, kick their first goal, receive their diploma, or take on anything that takes effort and skill, they will encounter frustration, disappointment and a myriad of distractions. Often times they'll want to give up. Some parents may feel sympathy when their kids are struggling and want to solve their problems. Others may become impatient and angry. What our children need most from us is to be truly present and listen with our heart to how they feel. Lend them your ear, and your undivided attention! It's truly awe-inspiring how kids tap into their innate wisdom and find their own solutions when they can talk themselves though the problem.

By helping our kids explore and discover virtues like purposefulness within themselves, we hone our purposefulness to raise great kids! Just like Susan is doing with Michael.

Wishing you and all our kids "Victory via Virtues!"
