Plenty of Parks

Two more parks opened last month in our City offering abundant opportunities for fun, fresh air and exercise. Stylus Park is the first of six planned neighborhood parks located in the Millenia project near Birch Road and SR125. The interaction themed park consists of a water feature, dog park, bocce ball courts and much more.

The long-awaited Orange Park, at 1475 Fourth Avenue, is a great example of maximizing underutilized space. Through a land donation from SDG&E and funding by State Proposition 84, the 3.9 acre park is a welcome sight to the neighborhood. It is located adjacent to the South Chula Vista Branch Library and features a dog park, three gazebos, tot lot, walking trail with exercise equipment and sports areas including a multipurpose field and basketball court.

Orange Park brings the total of City maintained parks to 57. To reserve the gazebos at Orange Park or for more information about any other City park, check out the website.

Thank You To and From CVPD

Recent events, both locally and around the country, have had a major impact on both police officers and the citizens they serve. Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) received an out-pouring of support from the Chula Vista community following the police tragedies in Dallas, Baton Rouge, and the loss of San Diego Police Officer Jonathan DeGuzman, a resident of Chula Vista. The local public has come forward in many ways to show appreciation to CVPD during this time. Gifts of food and flowers were delivered to police headquarters as well as thank you cards and letters. At Sleep Train Amphitheatre, hundreds of attendees stood in a long line to shake the hand or say a kind word to CVPD officers working events. Officers reported that citizens in restaurants have picked up their lunch tabs and patrol officers have had citizens stop them on the street just to say thank you.

Your kind efforts have been noticed and appreciated by all the men and women of our outstanding police department. They, in turn, want to thank you, and emphasize how CVPD strives to be a transparent organization that focuses on community policing. Community policing is an approach that focuses on police officers building ties and working closely with members of the community. These efforts include the National Night Out event held on August 2 and attended by several hundred who watched demonstrations, toured the facility, and met S.W.A.T. members and other police personnel; a virtual ride-along that described events on the City's Facebook and Twitter as we patrolled the City for a few hours (and found a stolen vehicle through LoJack!); Coffee with a Cop where residents enjoy a cup of coffee and meet to ask questions of their local officers in various neighborhoods (next one September 30 - see events below for details); and most recently officers participated at HarborFest in the #HugThePolice nationwide social media effort as a way to promote trust and admiration for officers.

There are many ways you can get involved with your police department! Attend events throughout the year including National Night Out, Coffee with a Cop, Honoring our Heroes Gala and Luau fundraiser or participate in the annual Citizen or Teen Police Academy. Monetary donations are always welcomed to the CVPD Foundation or CVPAL which provide new school shoes and holiday gifts to children in need, or share your time as a Senior Volunteer Patrol member or Police Explorer! Check the website for details on any of the above.  And remember, we've got your back...thanks for scratching ours.

Innovation Station

A recent collaboration between Qualcomm Incorporated, the Chula Vista Elementary School District and the Chula Vista Public Library has resulted in a unique learning center. The Innovation Station makerspace extends hands-on learning utilizing an unused area of the Civic Center Library at 365 F Street.

Inspired by Qualcomm's Thinkabit Lab, the Innovation Station promotes student interest in technology and engineering careers. Currently, the lab is hosting Chula Vista sixth grade students with future plans to include additional grade levels and the entire community. A public viewing of the station is being planned; look for details in the next newsletter.

The colorful basement makeover includes brightly painted walls, beanbag chairs, a 3D printer, and a wall housing various supplies. It is defined as a space where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. Funding for the project was secured from a state library grant, Friends of the Chula Vista Library, City funding, the school district, and in-kind support from Qualcomm Incorporated.

Fighting Fires

If you have followed any news media in recent weeks, you are well aware that wildfires can occur in California just about anywhere and anytime. Chula Vista Fire Department (CVFD) participates in the California Master Mutual Aid Agreement where firefighters from other jurisdictions are requested to help fight fires. This summer,CVFD has been steadily assisting various cities and counties and has sent personnel to 15 fires - most of which have been wildfires. At the biggest fire, Blue Cut in the Cajon Pass/San Bernardino area, we had 15 personnel deployed to that one fire. Currently, personnel are deployed to four separate fires. In addition to manpower, several Fire Department vehicles were used at the many recent wildfires. All associated costs are reimbursable to the City via the California Fire Assistance Agreement.  But, don't worry, our nine Fire Stations continue to be fully staffed and are ready to help you as needed here in Chula Vista!

Did you know humans cause more than 95% of California wildfires? Although we cannot predict when or where a disaster may occur, we can prepare! Visit the Fire Department's webpage for valuable tips on what do to before, during and after a fire. Register with Alert San Diego, the County's regional emergency notification system, to receive phone, text message, and email notifications during fires, earthquakes and other disasters. Also available is the free, secure Nixle notification system to which Chula Vista's Fire, Police and Communications divisions will send text or emails regarding emergencies such as road closures, missing persons, and more. Text your zip code to 888777 or sign up for email Nixle notices.

...don't be surprised if you see people on Segways riding up and down the City's sidewalks. Why are they doing that, you ask? As part of the City's Asset Management Program, the City has hired the firm Cole & Associates to prepare a Pedestrian Connectivity Plan. The consultant will evaluate all sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, crosswalks and pedestrian signals for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. This includes identifying and measuring sidewalk and ramp slopes, obstructions, and cracks exceeding ¼-inch. Beginning in September, the inspection process, which will take place on Segways, is anticipated to run through March 2017. All deficiencies identified during this process will then be prioritized based on severity and social factors, such as the volume and type of pedestrian traffic. After the results are tabulated, the City will conduct workshops to obtain input and recommendations from the public and the disabled community.

...CVPD was awarded a $77,387 grant from the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to battle alcohol-related crime. The grant strengthens local law enforcement efforts by combining the efforts of local police officers and ABC agents.
