SHOPPING OPTIONS COMING SOON
Grocery stores - or lack thereof - has been a hot topic in our city for several months. We are pleased to share that all three of the closed Haggen stores in Chula Vista have been purchased. While none of the stores have provided us with definite opening dates at this time, here's the latest:
99 Ranch Market will be taking over the former Haggen location on Telegraph Canyon Road. Their website states their mission is: To provide our customers with high quality products at competitive pricing and a superior shopping experience that are achieved by our effective distribution and merchandising of Asian and American products, strong relationships with local vendors and our passion for our customers.
Smart and Final will occupy the former Terra Nova Shopping Plaza location on East H Street. With 250 grocery and foodservice stores, Smart & Final stores provide a convenient, low-cost source for cooking and cleaning needs. They have been around for 140 years and have stores in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and Northern Mexico.
Carnival Supermarket, Inc. is taking up residence at the former Third Avenue and L Street location. They have been in business for over 12 years and currently operate a store in National City.

YOUR OPINION PLEASE!
The City of Chula Vista is a great place to live, work and play. But like other cities across the nation, we are faced with the need to allocate more and more funding to maintain and improve existing infrastructure. In some areas, it is obvious what needs to be repaired or replaced, yet in other areas, critical maintenance will keep the roads, sidewalks, parks or buildings viable for many more years.
Chula Vista is considering potential funding options to address critical needs such as: * Pave, maintain and repair city streets and fix potholes * Upgrade aging police, fire and 9-1-1 emergency response facilities, equipment and communications to ensure reliable response * Retrofit storm drains to capture trash and reduce water pollution * Upgrade the City's irrigation and drainage systems to conserve drinking water and save energy * Make essential repairs to older libraries and recreation centers.

CVPD SWAT HELPS BABY
On January 26, officers from the Chula Vista Police Department SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team participated in the multi-jurisdictional response to Balboa Naval Hospital regarding reports of an "active shooter" at the facility.
When Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) SWAT arrived at the hospital, they received information that the purported gunman entered the pediatrics wing and was now holding several children hostage. Once CVPD SWAT heard a gunman was possibly inside the pediatrics wing, they immediately responded to that area of the hospital. Our SWAT team reached the pediatrics operating room and found a medical team preforming a serious operation on a small child. The operating team was unable to evacuate or stop the operation due to the seriousness of the procedure. Once CVPD SWAT realized the child could not be moved, they immediately surrounded the operating room to make sure the child and staff were protected during the remainder of the surgery. The medical staff reported the child had a successful procedure and is recovering well. They also passed on that they were very appreciative of CVPD SWAT's professionalism and ability to "think outside of the box" by posting officers to protect them while they performed the operation.
Ultimately, the law enforcement investigation revealed that no shots had been fired at the facility and fortunately no one was injured. Kudos to CVPD SWAT and all the other law enforcement agencies that quickly and efficiently responded to the situation. We are truly grateful for your service!

ROAD TO RIO OLYMPIC SPOTLIGHT
Every day, dozens of resident athletes train at the US Olympic Training Center - Chula Vista (OTC-CV). Many of them are away from home, training full-time for the opportunity to represent the United States on a global level. To honor these athletes and pay tribute to the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio di Janeiro, we will highlight a different Olympic sport and an athlete who trains in that sport at the OTC-CV. Can't get enough Road to Rio action? Follow the City on Facebook and Twitter. We will be highlighting a new Olympic hopeful each week as part of our #RoadtoRioWednesday spotlight.
Archery - Headquartered at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, archery athletes train at the Easton Archery Center of Excellence. Archery made its Olympic deput in Paris at the 1900 Olympic games and quickly rose in popularity. At the 1904 St. Louis Olympic Games, it was already one of the leading Olympic sports and marked the first time that women archers were allowed to compete in the games. Archers use a recurve bow and an arrow to hit the bull's eye on a target from a distance of 70 meters, or 229.7 feet! Athlete Spotlight- Brady Ellison Ellison became a resident athlete at the OTC- CV and has since reached the top world rankings for the Men's Recurve Bow. He represented the United States at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and won a silver team medal at the 2012 Olympics in London. Currently Ellison is ranked number one in the nation in Recurve Seniors Men.

...responding to a fire or medical call is never routine including this recent incident when Chula Vista Firefighter Robert Parkhill arrived at the scene of a residential fire. Parkhill, who has been with CVFD for three years, noticed a large terrarium in the very smoky room where the fire was blazing. He aimed a fire extinguisher into the terrarium and then noticed the almost 6 foot snake inside! Realizing the snake, who was covered in white dust from the extinguisher, was still alive, he quickly grabbed the Boa Constrictor and proceeded to clean out its mouth and wipe off the snake with water. When asked why he saved a snake, Parkhill replied, "I'd save any animal as long as it's alive. And this was someone's pet." Thank you, Robert, for your dedication!
