PARKS, PEOPLE AND PLAY

Chula Vista is fortunate to have several organizations and companies that volunteer to help the city in a variety of ways - from painting out graffiti to pulling weeds to cleaning cages at the Animal Care Facility - there is something for everyone who wishes to help!  Recently, the Hensel Phelps Construction Company called Human Resources looking for volunteer activities.  Over 20 volunteers from Hensel Phelps, along with others from the City's Youth Sports Council, Otay Ranch youth football, Chula Vista National Little League, and the Rebels soccer team assisted

City Parks staff at Voyager Park.  They worked for several hours removing clump grass from the sports playing fields at Voyager Park and leveling it to make a safe playing area.

These fields are used for lacrosse and soccer and the clump grass was making it very difficult for effective play.  The 100 volunteers and City staff including Parks Ranger Sam Alzubaidi, Parks Supervisor Hugo Martinez and Senior Gardener Charlie Hoffman, dug up and removed the clump grass, then raked and sprayed the area, finally topping it off with 10 yards of new top soil.  It was a true team effort!

In addition to providing willing and helpful volunteers, the Hensel Phelps Company also provided t-shirts, snacks, drinks, and hosted a barbeque after the park work for all the volunteers! The City of Chula Vista is grateful to all the volunteers and we are sure the lacrosse and soccer players are too.  If you or your company would like to volunteer at the City, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at (619) 585-5658 or CLICK HERE

ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL

There have been recent incidents around the country that have not shown some police departments and their staff in a good light. However, we were thrilled recently to receive a very favorable email regarding one of our own Chula Vista Police officers who went above and beyond the call of duty to help.

Triathlete Xanthe Belsky wrote to thank an officer from the CVPD Traffic Unit who was at the Chula Vista Challenge Triathlon on July 19.  On the hot and humid day, she ran out of water during the bicycle portion and was overheard by the officer when she stated this to her friend.  A traffic volunteer provided her one of his bottles of water while the officer, later identified as Manny Salazar, offered to replenish her water bottle and catch up with her.  Belsky says, "A few minutes later, he handed me my bottle of water WITH ICE?!? Are you freaking kidding me? It was amazing for my morale and soul. In addition, I cycled up next to another athlete, he hadn't brought ANY water whatsoever, so I was able to share. Thank you, Mystery Officer. You're totally cool.

Not only is Officer Salazar an exemplary officer, he also is a skilled and talented one!  Recently, he and fellow CVPD officer Michael Knapp participated in the Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition in Arizona.   Featuring 145 riders from across the United States, they both represented Chula Vista Police Department exceptionally well during the day-long competition.  In the Best Overall Rider event, Officer Salazar placed 2nd and Officer Knapp was 3rd; in Honda Individual Rider, Officer Salazar placed 1st and Officer Knapp was 2nd; together they placed 1st in the Honda Team Ride; and in the Honda 4-Man Competition, the two CVPD Officers placed 3rd along with two motor officers from Arizona.

Thank you Ms. Belsky for writing to us and thank you Officers Salazar and Knapp. You are just two of the many outstanding employees at the City of Chula Vista and we appreciate you!

ROHR'S 75th ANNIVERSARY

Chula Vista is celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Rohr Aircraft Corporation by declaring August 3-7, "Rohr Week." The company was founded on August 6, 1940, by Fred H. Rohr, known as an "artist with metals" who realized the vision to build detailed aircraft parts and assemblies to support America's war efforts. Rohr also is known for creating the fuel tanks for Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis.

The Rohr legacy runs deep in Chula Vista. The mothers of Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas and Councilman John McCann worked at Rohr. The internationally-known firm has had a highly significant financial impact on the City, employing thousands of residents and contributing millions of dollars to the local economy over the past 75 years.

Now known as UTC Aerospace Systems (also formerly Goodrich), the firm continues as the City's largest private employer and is today's leading supplier of nacelle and pylon systems for the world's major commercial airframe manufacturers and engine makers.

Happy Anniversary to Rohr and here's to many more successful years to come!

DID YOU KNOW...

...our new City website was just honored by Vision Internet for its 2015 "What's Next Awards" competition in the area of transparency.  Chula Vista is only one of four cities nationwide to receive the prestigious award and was recognized for our efforts in sharing important information with residents.  Using the website, social media and other online tools to facilitate the electoral redistricting efforts, Chula Vista's website also provided an interactive map of the new districts.

...in an example of never giving up, our Cold Case Investigator and retired CVPD Sergeant Bob Conrad recently helped convict a murder suspect.  In November 1999, three suspects went to the residence at 511 Paseo Burga with the intent of robbing the residents.  One of the suspects used a gun and shot homeowner Sergio Morales, a local businessman, who died at the scene. Based on a lack of evidence at the time, the case went cold and the suspect(s) could not be identified.  Sgt. Conrad picked up the investigation approximately three years ago and was able to obtain DNA evidence from a knit cap that was left at the scene.  He worked tirelessly in his investigation and was able to identify Joe Mora as a suspect in this case through witness statements and DNA evidence.  Mora was arrested in 2013 and was convicted last month of first degree murder with special circumstances of using a firearm in the commission of the crime. Congratulations and thank you Sgt. Conrad and the Crimes of Violence Unit.  His efforts have provided the Morales family some answers and peace to their horrific tragedy.

...the Civic Center Library will be installing a landscaped diagonal pedestrian corridor through the existing east parking lot to allow easier access to the library. Featuring native drought tolerant plants in planter boxes throughout, the Parklet will include informational boards explaining the benefits of native plants and water conservation, as well as listing upcoming library events.  The new Parklet project is expected to begin late summer and will take approximately one year to complete.

...Chula Vista artist Michael Leaf has produced another masterpiece.  Using scrap metal from the decommissioned South Bay Power Plant that was imploded in February 2013, he has designed this beautiful piece that sits at the end of J Street, near the boat ramps. In addition, Leaf will be installing a bench and a map also made from the plant's scraps in the same location.

...in preparation for the second phase of the Third Avenue Streetscape project, several Queen Palm trees were removed from the median area of the street.  Our City arborist and the project team decided to remove the unstable trees as a safety concern.  Once the streetscape project is complete, which consists of new landscaping, widened sidewalks, crosswalk pavers, ADA pedestrian ramps and more, new Queen Palm trees will be installed.  The second phase is expected to be completed in late spring 2016.

Open to participants of all skill levels, the fee is $95 for Chula Vista residents and $119 for non-residents. CLICK HERE to register.

...on July 14, the Chula Vista City Council unanimously approved the Districting Commission's recommended districting plan which recommended the City be divided into four electoral districts. Beginning in 2016 with Districts 3 and 4, those running for councilmember will have to live in their respective districts and will be elected by voters living in the respective districts.  Elections for Districts 1 and 2 will be held in 2018. To view the map with Council District boundaries and numbers, CLICK HERE.
