CVPD GIVES -- A LOT MORE THAN TICKETS!

If you think that Chula Vista police only give out traffic tickets and operate DUI check points, then you are about to learn there is so much more to this dedicated group of men and women. Most recently their generosity was demonstrated by two successful and heart-warming events.

In response to a tragic incident, an impromptu fund raising effort, led by the Crimes of Violence Unit detectives, was held among Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) staff to benefit three young girls who lost their mother in a recent homicide. CVPD employees along with other partner agencies generously donated over $3,300 in cash and gift cards as well as numerous wrapped gifts organized by our police dispatchers. UCSD Police Department donated three bicycles for the children who were also included in the annual CVPD toy drive. A fund to benefit the children has been organized by their family and over $11,000 has been donated as of January 6.  Anyone wishing to contribute can do so, CLICK HERE, for the Go Fund Me details.

Another event is the annual holiday dinner give-away, coordinated with Athletes for Education, Wal-Mart, and the Chula Vista Police Foundation, who provided a turkey with all the trimmings for dinner to over 500 needy families. The officers, along with former San Diego Charger and MMA fighters from Alliance Gym, distributed the items to the grateful families on December 13.

These efforts, along with the annual PAL (Police Activities League) toy drive, are an example that CVPD staff exemplify compassion, caring and giving which is the true meaning of kindness not only during the holiday season, but all year.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES

Chula Vista, National City and Coronado will be helping athletes reach for the gold in the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. These three cities will serve as "South County Host Towns" prior to the competition which takes place in Los Angeles. Host towns are responsible for transportation, accommodations, meals, training facilities and cultural events for 100 Special Olympics World Games delegates from July 21-24, 2015.

Host Town cities will welcome and celebrate their delegations while showcasing what makes their city special. In addition to experiencing a day at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center, South County delegates will participate in beach activities and other fun local attractions.

Delegates from around the world will compete in 25 sporting events during the L.A. 2015 Special Olympics with opening ceremonies set for July 25 and competitions held through August 2. This is the single biggest humanitarian and athletic event in Southern California since the 1984 Olympic Games.

HEALTHY CV INITIATIVE

What do bicycle lanes, community gardens, and smoke-free areas have in common?  They are all topics being explored through the City's new Healthy Chula Vista initiative!  The initiative was started to help identify opportunities to better promote public health throughout the City's services and projects.  In October, City staff met with representatives from local hospitals, school districts, civic and business groups, and bicycling advocates to brainstorm opportunities and potential partnerships to improve the mental, physical, and social well-being of residents.  Then, in November, over 25 City staff members and stakeholders participated in a bike tour of western Chula Vista.  The tour was organized  to showcase "complete streets" principles, in which roadways are designed to accommodate all users (such as motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists) of all ages and abilities.  The tour visited recent pedestrian-friendly improvements within the Third Avenue Village, protected bike paths on H Street at the Bayfront, and school crossings around Feaster Charter School.

Community members are encouraged to attend the next Healthy Chula Vista meeting on January 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Norman Park Senior Center, located at 270 F Street.  The meeting will allow residents and community partners to provide input on draft health-related amendments to the City's General Plan.  Some of the topic areas include transportation, physical activity, healthy food access, health care and prevention, and environmental quality.  For more information, contact the City of Chula Vista's Conservation Section at (619) 409-3893 or EMAIL.

AQUATICS PROGRAM HONORED

Chula Vista's WARN (Water Awareness in Residential Neighborhoods) program has been recognized by Aquatics International as "Best of Aquatics 2014: Community Outreach." The program was developed by the City's Fire and Recreation Departments in 2007 in response to three fatal drownings.

The comprehensive drowning prevention plan educates residents about water safety and in cooperation with several partnerships, provides continuous education through community events. Two such events include the April Pools Day as a reminder that May is Drowning Prevention Month, and Save a Life Summer held in August. Participants are taught the importance of being a water watcher, swim lessons, hands-only CPR swimlesson demonstrations, water safety and drowning prevention measures. These activities have helped the City achieve its goal of having zero drownings since 2007.

In addition, Kaiser Permanente has provided grants totaling $365,000 to fund the Elementary Learn to Swim program which provides swim lessons to fourth grade students as part of their physical education. To date, more than 9,000 children have benefitted from this program.   USA Swimming Foundation, through their Make a Spash Local Partner Program, has also provided $24,000 worth of free and reduced cost swim lessons to the community.   Other Chula Vista partnerships include the Chula Vista Firefighter's Foundation, Friends of Chula Vista Parks and Recreation, Rotary Club of Chula Vista, Safe Kids San Diego and the San Diego County Aquatic Council.
