CIVIC CENTER LIGHTS
Energy efficient LED lighting will again light up Chula Vista's Civic Center complex over the holidays at no cost to the City. The display featuring more than 250 light strands on buildings and palm trees is part of an effort to encourage residents and businesses to make the switch to the newer and safer energy saving technology. By exchanging their traditional incandescent holiday lights for LED (Light Emitting Dioxide) lighting strands, homeowners can reduce energy costs by up to 90 percent. Also, LEDs last more than 10 times longer than conventional lights, produce a brighter light, and have cooler operating temperatures-making them safe to touch and less likely to cause fire. Chula Vista holiday lights and installation are fully funded through the City's Local Government Partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric and the California Public Utilities Commission. The partnership has allowed the City to upgrade its facilities with more energy-efficient lighting, heating, and air conditioning and provide no-cost energy services to the community. Need more help conserving over the holidays? Schedule a free Home Energy and Water Check-Up by calling (619) 409-3893 or EMAIL. |
WE LOVE A PARADE! AND SNOW!
The historic Starlight Parade is coming to Chula Vista on Saturday, December 6, and is expected to draw thousands of people to Third Avenue. Can you believe that snow is forecast for Chula Vista that day? Or, a snow hill to be exact! Kids of all ages can slide down the snow hill in Memorial Park between 1 and 6 p.m. at no cost, thanks to sponsor SDG&E.
Prior to the parade, Third Avenue Village Association (TAVA) is hosting the Holiday in the Village festival from noon to 5 p.m. in Memorial Park and at participating merchants along Third Avenue. Then pick your spot along Third Avenue between H and E Streets for the Starlight Parade which begins at 6 p.m. Some highlights of the day include:
* Have fun sliding down the snow hill * Hear your favorite holiday music * See the Grinch, reindeer, carolers, and Santa * Check out holiday discounts and promotions at participating Third Avenue merchants * Marvel at the festive floats, school bands, dance performers, and more in the Starlight Parade
Volunteers are still needed to help make the parade a success. CLICK HERE for more information or to sign up to volunteer. |

HOLIDAY RECYCLING
Don't let your good recycling efforts take a holiday! While shopping, use reusable or cloth bags; make your own cards using recycled paper or send eCards; give rechargeable batteries and a battery charger with those gifts requiring batteries.
Remember that wrapping paper from all those beautifully wrapped gifts can be recycled in the blue bin. Also for the blue recycle bin is food and beverage cartons. Throw in that milk, orange juice or creamer carton as well as children's juice boxes, soup broth, soy milk, or protein drink cartons. Clean, empty cartons can be recycled into new paper towels, napkins and even building materials.
Frying your turkey this year? Cooking oil can be recycled too! Put used cooking oil in a bottle or container with a watertight lid. Call Republic Services at (619) 421-9400 one day before your regular collection day, then put your oil at the curb on your day. Or you can also take oil to the Household Hazard Waste Facility located at 1800 Maxwell Road on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Why should you recycle oil? Clean-burning biodiesel is made from fats and oils collected locally and recycled by New Leaf into diesel used by 125 City heavy-duty vehicles including fire engines, dump trucks, excavators and sewer maintenance trucks.
Finally, single family households with curbside service can recycle live trees by placing them at the curb on collection day. Remove all ornaments, tinsel, garland and stand, and cut the tree into four-foot sections if possible. Plastic trees are not recyclable and must be disposed of as trash. If you live in an apartment or condo, please contact your property management for collection dates at your complex. |

CVPD, OTS, DUI, AND YOU!
If the title above is too many acronyms for you, then just remember this: be a responsible, non-distracted driver and don't drink and drive. The Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) has received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long program of special enforcements and public awareness. Activities from the grant wil l allow CVPD to conduct several events including educational presentations, distracted driving enforcement, seat belt and child safety seat enforcement, speed, red light and stop sign enforcement, motorcycle safety enforcement, and DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols.
CVPD is committed to keeping our roadways safe but you can help too. With the upcoming holidays, often comes celebrating with alcohol. Remember to always have a designated driver who agrees to not drink alcohol, or call a taxi. You can help make it a safe holiday season for all. |

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
After the big holiday meals, there are decisions to be made besides which sofa to nap on! What will you do with the leftovers - throw them out or save them for lunch the next day? Do you put them in the compost bin? Since we spend a lot of time, energy and money putting food on the table, food should be considered a resource and there are ways to effectively handle food waste. The Environmental Services section is here to help you with ideas to reduce, reuse and recycle food.
Start with reducing. You can do this by planning your menus, creating a shopping list, not shopping while hungry, and preparing smaller portions. Then reuse your food by freezing leftovers, use them in lunch the following day, mix up leftovers into soups, or add other ingredients creating a whole new meal.
Finally, recycle your food by composting. Chula Vista has a residential backyard composting program that includes composting workshops, Master Composter training courses, and reduced cost compost bins to Chula Vista residents. Compost provides soil fertility for stronger, healthier plants, organic matter with many nutrients and helps control plant pests and diseases. Compost workshops are held on Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Living Coast Discovery Center. The next Master Composter training course begins on March 11, 2015. To sign up or for more information, call (619) 476-2409.
