STORY TIME AT THE LIBRARY
Children in Chula Vista have returned to the classroom with another year of homework, friends, and learning experiences. But what about the little ones who haven't yet started school? The Chula Vista Public Library has some wonderful programs to help them get ready for that big day in the future. Ready to Read takes place at all three library branches. Bringing your child to a weekly story time reinforces the importance of reading, develops listening skills, and gives them the opportunity to socialize with other children their own age. Held at the Civic Center on Thursday at 11 a.m.; South branch on Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. and Otay Ranch on Thursday at 11:15 a.m.
PJ Story Time is a fun program - and yes, anyone can wear their PJ's! It can reinforce the good habit of winding down at the end of a long day with a book, and that reading can take place anywhere - not just in the classroom. Held at the Civic Center on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and Otay Ranch on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The library also offers a Baby PJ Story Time and a Baby Story Time at the Otay Ranch library. It's never too early to start with the reading habit! Monday at 5 p.m. for Baby PJ Story Time and Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. for Baby Story Time.
On weekends, the Rolling Readers provide a story time at the Civic Center (Sunday at 2 p.m.) and South (Saturday at 2 p.m.) This is a great opportunity to make reading a family activity. School success depends on everyone in the family taking an interest.
A " Kindergarten Checklist for Success" is available on the library web site, CLICK HERE. It lists 17 important skills your child should know before he/she starts kindergarten. Learning these skills will help your preschooler succeed. Consider sharing this list with babysitters, day care providers, and grandparents and encourage them to help your youngster practice with crayons, pencils, counting, letters and colors. Also, look out for the library's " Kindergarten Bootcamp" program - a week-long immersion experience for 3-5 year olds to help them acclimate to the world of kindergarten. It takes place in the late spring and fall, and space is limited.
Reading is critical for school success so this year let the library help you and your preschooler get ready for kindergarten.

ACT CHULA VISTA LAUNCHED
As you're driving through your neighborhood, you spot an ugly pothole. Wouldn't you love to be able to take a picture of it and report it as soon as you see it? Now, in the City of Chula Vista, you can do just that! This new application, called Alert, Connect, Track (ACT) Chula Vista, allows residents to submit requests for non-emergency service via their Smartphones. The phone application is free and works with iPhone and Android devices. (Search for ACT Chula Vista on Google Play Store or iTunes). Issues can also be reported using a widget on the City website (CLICK HERE), or on the City Facebook page (ChulaVistaCity). ACT Chula Vista replaces the former SeeClickFix reporting system.
Just a few examples of issues that can be reported using ACT Chula Vista include graffiti, potholes, dead animals, malfunctioning traffic signals, and abandoned vehicles. Requests reported through ACT Chula Vista can provide location, description and photographic information regarding the issue. The service is available in different languages and requests can be submitted anonymously. ACT Chula Vista allows citizens to not only report the non-emergency issues, but to monitor them as well. Once the issue is documented with ACT Chula Vista, the reporting citizen will receive a notification and tracking number. The request is then automatically forwarded to the appropriate department for review. Once the issue is addressed, the status will be updated and posted on ACT Chula Vista. City staff will monitor ACT Chula Vista during normal business hours. The system eliminates the same request being submitted multiple times and allows staff to work more efficiently by filtering requests regarding type, status or department assigned. ACT Chula Vista also has a Q&A button that addresses common questions about Chula Vista. ACT Chula Vista is strictly for non-emergency services and any emergency should still be reported to 911.
