HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME

Start your summer off right and stay cool in the pool! Chula Vista's two public pools- Parkway Aquatic Center at 385 Park Way, and Loma Verde Aquatic Center at 1420 Loma Lane - have a variety of activities for all levels of swimmers.  Adult lap swim and family recreation swim is scheduled at both facilities and cost $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for children.

Swim classes are scheduled June 16-August 29 at both pools.  Fees range from $21-$35 for residents and $26-$44 for non-residents.  In addition to the regular swim classes, an Aqua Fun and Fit class is offered free of charge to children ages 9-15.  The class encourages healthy lifestyles while providing an opportunity to exercise and have fun in the water.  Six different sessions will be offered - three at each pool.  The popular Junior Lifeguard program at Parkway Aquatic Center provides an introduction to water rescue, first aid and life saving techniques for kids ages 9-14.  This class is set for June 30-July 11 and cost $60 for residents and $75 for non-residents.

CLICK HERE for a complete list of all activities, times, registration information, and fees.  Although Parkway will close June 7-15 for annual maintenance, Loma Verde Pool will be open regular hours that week.

FIRE:  READY, SET, GO!

While the recent wildfires in the northern part of San Diego County were quite devastating, the City of Chula Vista was keeping a watchful eye to make sure the same thing didn't happen here.  Our fire and police personnel, as well as City crews from Public Works and other departments, took proactive measures to keep Chula Vista safe.  Staff kept a vigilant watch over the City while on their normal rounds as well as stepping up police patrols in canyon areas, in homeless encampments, and other potentially hazardous locations.  Even City contractors, such as trash collectors, were on alert for any suspicious activity.  In addition, volunteers from the City's CERT (Citizen's Emergency Response Team) were patrolling the City on fire watch.

Not only did we step up efforts here at home, the Chula Vista Fire Department (CVFD) deployed five engines and 23 personnel to assist with the fire-fighting in Carlsbad, San Marcos, Rancho Bernardo and Camp Pendleton.  With these brave men and women helping their comrades in the north, coverage was maintained at all nine of our fire stations and Chula Vista remained safe.

Officials have reported the North County fires could have been much worse, but many of those residents were prepared with defensible space around their property, following evacuation orders, and had a plan.  How can you be prepared for the next fire?  The CVFD's "Ready, Set, Go" fire preparation plan is a great resource:  CLICK HERE.
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) recently honored our fine city as an Energy Champion for outstanding results in energy efficiency and conservation.  Chula Vista has been at the forefront of sustainability since adopting its first Climate Action Plan in 2000.  Other City program highlights include an adaptive street light controls pilot program, small business energy evaluations, and sustainable energy home showcases.  Over the last year, SDG&E incentives for energy retrofits at City-owned buildings totaled $476,299 with an annual savings of 936,970 kWh.  For more information about Chula Vista's energy policies and programs, please CLICK HERE.

NEW SECURITY ALARM ORDINANCE

If you have a security alarm in your home or business, please note some new changes. Recently, the new Security Alarm Ordinance, along with new security alarm permit and fee schedules have been approved. Additionally, the City Council approved a contract with PMAM Corporation to administer the Security Alarm Program for the Chula Vista Police Department. These important changes will allow the Police Department to manage its limited resources and better serve the needs and expectations of our citizens and business community.

The following changes are effective immediately Fines for false alarm responses by the Police Department will be charged to the permitted site as follows: first violation $100; second violation $200; any additional violations are $500. Billing for false alarms will begin in June 2014, with all security alarm locations starting with a zero alarm count. False alarms will be billed based upon a rolling 12 month period. Security alarm permit fees have been modified to $28.75 each year for both residential and business sites. Two-year alarm permits obtained prior to the new program changes will be honored until the permit expiration date. Permit decals and renewal stickers will no longer be issued.

Citizens and business owners will be able to obtain permits, update permit information, pay permit fees and false alarm fines online, by mail or by telephone via PMAM Corporation. Contact information for PMAM Corporation is forthcoming. Until then, please contact Barbie Brookover, Police Support Services Manager with the Chula Vista Police Department, at (619) 691-5128.

Consequently, the adjacent ballparks needed new soil and Voyager Park had a great need for sod replacement.  Working with a crew from the Center for Employment Opportunities, City staff was able to replenish the ballparks and Voyager field. Talk about great recycling efforts!  Thank you Parks Division.
