TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

The Chula Vista Greenbelt is a 28-mile open space, park and multi-trail system loop that extends through the Otay Valley, Sweetwater Valley, and the bayfront. It passes through the cities of Chula Vista, National City, and San Diego and also property in the County of San Diego. This unique Greenbelt provides urban relief and recreational opportunities for the entire South Bay area, as well as the greater San Diego region. Since 1989, much of the area has been secured as permanent open space with approximately 21 miles of trails designated for public use.

The Greenbelt Trail Marker Program, funded through a County of San Diego Neighborhood Reinvestment grant, provided for the production and installation of trail markers along the 21 miles of open trails. Each of the trail markers have a jurisdictional logo where the marker is located, the trail name of that specific segment, and was designed with a Centennial Greenbelt logo to recognize Chula Vista's Centennial. In addition to the production and installation of trail markers, the program provided for 3,000 pocket maps that will help guide the trail user throughout the network of multi-purpose trails. The pocket map highlights points of interest and recreational amenities located within each trail segment of the Greenbelt.

CITY RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently bestowed upon the City of Chula Vista an Organizational Leadership Award.  The City is one of only three organizations nationwide receiving the award and the only city in the country to be recognized for this honor.

According to the EPA, Chula Vista's Organizational Leadership Award is given to organizations "that not only have their own comprehensive greenhouse gas inventories and aggressive emissions reduction goals, but also exemplify leadership in their internal response to climate change, through engagement of their peers, competitors, partners, and supply chain, and addressing climate risk in their enterprise strategies."

Specifically, Chula Vista was recognized for implementing climate mitigation and adaptation strategies within its municipal operations and throughout the community.  The Chula Vista City Council adopted its first Climate Action Plan in 2000, which has since served as a framework to address climate change, while creating numerous co-benefits such as utility savings, better air quality, reduced traffic congestion, local economic development, and improved quality of life.

ORANGE PARK UPDATE

Construction plans are currently being prepared for the City's 55th park to be located in the Montgomery area, next to the South Chula Vista Branch Library and within a San Diego Gas & Electric corridor.  Orange Park should break ground in June 2014 with an anticipated opening in spring 2015.

The new 3.9 acre park will feature a multi-purpose field, a children's play area, outdoor exercise equipment, shade structures/picnic shelters, a restroom, parking lots, sloped turf area for spectators, turf, pathways, benches, a basketball half court and an off-leash dog area.

Residents in the area have provided feedback on the design and helped name the park. Funded by Proposition 84, which provides bonds for clean water, parks and coastal protections, Orange Park is estimated to cost $2.8 million.

HELP US SOLVE A CRIME

Do you want to help be the "eyes and ears" of the Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD)?  Do you have information about an unsolved crime and want to share it?  Do you know something that could help bring closure for the family of a cold case? If you answered "yes" to any of the questions above, then you now have an opportunity to partner with CVPD and their program, "Help Us Solve a Crime."

Currently, CVPD is focusing on six areas of unsolved crime where the public can provide tips:  missing adults at risk, missing juveniles at risk, theft/burglary, violent crimes/robbery, unsolved murder/cold cases, and vandalism/graffiti. The CVPD website contains descriptions and photographs.  Simply click on the photo to see more information about each case.

If you have information to share, provide a crime tip to CVPD. The Help us Solve a Crime program offers three options to make a crime tip:  call the Tip Line at (619) 422-TIPS (8477), submit a tip online, CLICK HERE, or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at (858) 580-8477.

Chula Vista Police designed the new program to make it easy for community members to reach out and provide tips that could potentially lead to an arrest.  In addition to the detailed crime descriptions, the website also contains a list of Frequently Asked Questions where you can find information about Megan's Law, reporting abuse, identity theft, and more.
