SWIMMING POOL SAFETY

With summer upon us, Chula Vista Fire and Recreation departments want to remind residents of the dangers of backyard and community swimming pools. Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in children ages one to four and most drownings occur in residential pools. Nearly half of the victims were last seen in the house and had been missing for fewer than five minutes.

Drowning is preventable: homeowners should install fencing and alarms around pools and lock doors to prevent unauthorized access. Children should learn to swim at an early age and should never be left unattended near a pool.  An adult "water watcher" should supervise children when they are swimming. How can you be prepared? Learn CPR and have a phone nearby to call 911 if necessary.  If a child is missing, always look in the pool area first.

MORE POOL INFO -- NEW POOL PUMPS

The Kamali family loved their pool but didn't love paying the high electric bill that came with it every month. After speaking with a trained and licensed pool service contractor, they found out they could upgrade their 2-horsepower single speed pool pump to a variable speed pump that runs longer but at significantly lower power.

Since the new pump was installed, it is saving the Kamalis more than $100 per month compared to the old pump, and the timer has been re-programmed so the cleaning cycle does not run between the peak demand hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. They have also found that their new pump has improved the pool's water quality and is much quieter!

If you have an old single-speed pool pump motor, you can upgrade it to a more energy efficient variable speed pump and significantly reduce your energy use.  The City, in partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric and CleanTECH San Diego, recently completed several case studies of Chula Vista residents, who installed new variable speed pool pumps.  These residents experienced average electricity savings of 70 percent.

To view the case studies and learn more about the benefits of a similar pool pump upgrade, visit the City's CLEAN website at CLICK HERE.   Additionally, SDG&E offers a $200 rebate to help bring down the cost of making the upgrade.  If you think you are a good candidate for a new energy efficient pool pump, please contact a local pool contractor today!  For further assistance or to receive a free home energy and water evaluation, please contact the City's Conservation staff at (619) 409-3893 or EMAIL.

FREE SWIMMING LESSON FUN

And in even more pool news, Chula Vista's Loma Verde Aquatic Center will be participating with thousands of kids and adults around the world for the fourth annual Guinness World's Record "World's Largest Swimming Lesson!" This free simultaneous swimming lesson is available to those ages four and above.

Last year, the City of Chula Vista became record holders for the current Guinness World Record in the simultaneous swimming lesson event. With 24,873 participants representing 15 different countries across five continents, that's quite a feat!

In an effort to introduce water safety and swimming lessons, the annual event intends to help reduce the risk of drowning which is the leading cause of death for children under 14. Research shows that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children ages one to four, yet many receive no formal lessons or water safety training.

To participate in this year's World's Largest Swimming Lesson on Tuesday, June 18, at 8 a.m., provide your name and age to EMAIL or call (619) 409-1687. Loma Verde Aquatic Center is located at 1420 Loma Lane.

Other areas in the garden will highlight the use of native plants, cacti and succulents.  Eventually there will be a section devoted to creating defensible space for fire fuel reduction in the Wildland Urban Interface along Chula Vista's open space canyons.
