WHAT DO ALL THOSE 1-1 NUMBERS MEAN?
, 2, 3, 4, what do those numbers stand for? On a daily basis we are bombarded with numbers yet many we have no knowledge of or how they can help us. Here's the lowdown on the "1-1's":
-1-1 San Diego connects people with community, health and disaster services through a free, 24/7 stigma-free phone service and searchable online database. The 2-1-1 serves the entire population of San Diego County as the only confidential, dialing code service and is offered in over 50 languages. From substance abuse treatment, child or parent care, to food, housing or financial assistance, 2-1-1 can help.
-1-1 (not 311 the rock band!) is used by some large cities as a service directory and service request site. Although not offered locally, you may find 3-1-1 services available while traveling to such places as Los Angeles, Sacramento and Houston.
-1-1 is the telephone number for local directory assistance and information.
-1-1 is the transportation and traffic information telephone hotline. It is offered almost throughout the entire United States.
-1-1 used by many wireless phone providers as a general customer service access number, is also sometimes used as *611.
-1-1 (not 7/11 where you get your Slurpees!) is used for the Telecommunications Relay Service to translate from TDD for the deaf to speech, and vice versa. The relay service allows deaf people to converse with the hearing over the phone through an operator.
-1-1 is underground service alert toll free number. If you are planning to dig on your property, you must call this number so you will know where underground utilities are located. The service is free.
-1-1 came about in 1968 and became the national emergency number for the United States. Calling this single number provided a caller access to police, fire and ambulance service. The number itself, however, did not become widely known until the 1970s, and many municipalities did not have 9-1-1 service until well into the 1980s. In most areas (approximately 96 percent of the U.S.) enhanced 9-1-1 is available, which automatically gives dispatch the caller's location. |
