PRESERVATION SHAPING THE FUTURE

Recently, the Chula Vista Historic Preservation Commission approved the designation of 23 historical resources.  The properties were determined to meet the criteria required for designation on the City's Register of Historical Resources. These include architectural significance, and/or association with persons or events of significance to Chula Vista's history. The property owners requested designation and are helping to lead the charge in sustaining and protecting valuable resources that define the unique character of Chula Vista.

Earth month serves as a reminder that the environment is composed of many resources that when preserved result in a healthy and sustainable environment. The recognition and preservation of valuable historical resources, like the 23 that were just recently designated, as well as several other City initiatives such as the Climate Change Initiative and the Watershed Initiative, help to advance the health and sustainability for today and the future.

There are now 96 locally designated Historical Resources in Chula Vista. For more information on historic preservation, or for the City's complete list of designated historical resources, EMAIL, or call (619) 691-5101.

ENTERPRISE ZONE

Recently, the City hosted an Enterprise Zone workshop on tax incentives for 20 local businesses. What is an Enterprise Zone, you ask? It's a geographically designated area in which businesses can receive substantial state tax breaks and other benefits. They were created to help stimulate California's business investments and to increase job opportunities. Some advantages of the Enterprise Zone program include tax savings and other deductions, access to specialized technical and financial assistance programs, and no-cost job referral service.

Chula Vista became part of the San Diego Regional Zone, which includes the City of San Diego and National City, in 2006. Last year, over 140 businesses used the Zone to generate approximately $23 million in tax savings and 1,400 additional jobs to Chula Vista.

KISS TRAFFIC GOODBYE WITH
SR 125!

Eight months after SANDAG cut tolls across the board for using South Bay Expressway (State Route 125 toll road), a record number of motorists are taking advantage of the underused facility. FasTrak customers save up to 80 percent off the cash/credit tolls, and local trips are just 50 cents between H Street and Birch Road. You can get $5 in free tolls when you pick up a FasTrak transponder at Costco, 895 East H Street in Chula Vista. If you already have an SBX account, take advantage of the Refer-A-Friend promotion to earn $10 in free toll credits for every new account opened with your referral code (your friend's new account gets $10 too).

South Bay Expressway stretches for 10 miles through eastern Chula Vista from State Route 905 near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry to State Route 54 near the Sweetwater Reservoir. The highway provides quick and convenient travel choices between eastern Chula Vista, Downtown San Diego, East County, Sorrento Valley, I-8, I-15, Otay Mesa, and Mexico.

To learn more about the South Bay Expressway, CLICK HERE.

Applications are due Friday, April 19, 2013.

... as part of the Blue Line Stations and Rail Rehabilitation project, the J Street trolley crossing area in Chula Vista requires complete closure from 10 p.m. Friday, April 12, to 6 a.m. on Monday, April 15. The road closure will physically be at the railroad/trolley tracks where they cross J Street.

Track installation will be from just south of H Street to just north of L Street, (but only blocking J Street).  The rails, which are one solid piece of steel, are 1,600 feet long and are coming in on a train that is 2,000 feet long!  The road cannot be reopened until these new rails are installed, and the massive train - almost one half of a mile in length -- cannot be moved until this operation is completed.  Then the train will be reloaded with the old rails which will be melted down at a steel mill and made into new rails for future use elsewhere in the country.

The ramps to I-5 freeway to and from J Street will remain open, but only accessible from Bay Boulevard to the west of the freeway.  Traffic wanting to access the freeway from east of the J Street trolley crossing will be detoured to either H or L Street which will be open.  Check the City's homepage under "Media Center" for  any updates on the project.  CLICK HERE

...Maria Kachadoorian, the Director of Finance/Treasurer for the City of Chula Vista, was honored as San Diego "CFO of the Year" at the San Diego Business Journal awards program in March.  The San Diego Business Journal recognizes individuals who go above and beyond their duties as CFO by playing a major role in the success of their businesses.

Under her leadership, the City of Chula Vista has weathered one of its most volatile financial periods culminating in the layoffs of over 331 city employees in three years, and a drastic reduction in services.  Chula Vista was one of the first cities in the San Diego County to implement mandatory pension reform of its employees which provided a $6 million annual cost savings to the City.  More recent, however, Kachadoorian reported to the City Council that the City has maintained a balanced budget and is near its goal of having 15 percent in reserves

...The Bayfront Cultural and Design Committee (BCDC) has been created to act as an advisory committee to the San Diego Unified Port District (District), through the Board of Port Commissioner's approval of the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan. The purpose of the BCDC is to advise the District regarding the design of parks, walkways, bikeways, cultural facilities, and development projects within the District's jurisdiction. If you are interested in submitting an application to be considered for participation on this committee, please CLICK HERE.  Applications are due by Friday, April 19.
