LED Holiday Lights Brighten City Hall
Energy efficient LED lights are lighting up Chula Vista's Civic Center complex over the holidays. The display, featuring more than 250 light strands on buildings and palm trees, is part of an effort to encourage residents and businesses to make the switch to newer and safer energy saving technology.
By exchanging traditional incandescent holiday lights for LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting strands, homeowners can reduce energy costs by up to 90 percent. Also, LEDs last more than 10 times longer than conventional lights, produce a brighter light, and have cooler operating temperatures---making them safe to touch and less likely to cause a fire.
Chula Vista's holiday lights and installation are funded through the City's local government partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric and the California Public Utilities Commission. In addition, The Home Depot-Rancho Del Rey store is sponsoring the extra energy costs of the display estimated at $50 for the entire holiday season. |
Shop Chula Vista Now Shop Chula Vista Now was launched just before the Thanksgiving holiday by our Economic Development and Communications staff. What is Shop Chula Vista Now, you ask? It's a marketing campaign aimed to have residents buy local and to have local businesses offer discounts to Shop Chula Vista Now incentive card holders. Part of the campaign is to brand Chula Vista as an "urban orchard" which acts like a giant marketplace for everything anyone could want. The urban orchard concept reminds shoppers that great shopping, dining, and services are located right here in Chula Vista. Having residents support local businesses helps our economy and boosts resources for the City. If you know of a business that we should add to the list, please encourage the owner or manager to visit www.ShopChulaVistaNow.com for information on getting involved. Check out the website and see where to pick up your incentive card and see the list of participating businesses: CLICK HERE. |

Home Energy Upgrades a Success
Since 2011, more than 200 Chula Vista households have successfully participated in the statewide Energy Upgrade California program. These homeowners were eligible for incentives up to $4,000 to help make their homes more energy efficient. On average, participating households reduced their energy usage by 23 percent and received incentives of $2,000 helping to lower their project costs by almost 20 percent. Additionally, 14 homeowners utilized zero percent-interest financing provided by the City's Home Upgrade, Carbon Downgrade program to fund their projects. Combined, these Chula Vista homes are expected to save more than 100,000 kilowatt hours of electricity and 17,000 therms of natural gas per year -- enough energy to power 65 homes! Along with lower energy bills, participants have reported improved comfort and air quality in their homes.
In order to participate in the Energy Upgrade California program, the homeowners signed-up for a comprehensive energy audit performed by a certified contractor. This audit requires the contractor to test all of the home's components that affect energy usage in order to determine where energy is being wasted and what can be done to fix the problems. Typical energy efficiency improvements include installing new attic or wall insulation, air sealing, furnace or air conditioner, water heater, appliances, and windows. All Energy Upgrade California contractors have been trained and are subject to quality assurance checks, which ensure that homeowners receive high quality workmanship that maximizes energy savings.
To find out how you can participate in Energy Upgrade California, CLICK HERE for program details and a list of local contractors. To take advantage of free home energy evaluations or zero percent-interest financing offered by the City, please contact the City of Chula Vista's Conservation Section by calling (619) 409-3893

CVPD is Looking (Out) for You!
You may have wondered why there seem to be so many police checkpoints. It's simple -- to help keep you and those you love safe. Through a special traffic enforcement and crash prevention grant, the Chula Vista Police Department is continuing to focus on preventing death and injuries on Chula Vista streets.
The grant, in effect through September 2013, is designed to provide public awareness and enforcement. Activities include special DUI saturation patrols, distracted driving enforcement (no texting!), seat belt and child safety seat enforcement, speed, red light and stop sign enforcement, court sting operations and stakeout operations to observe the "worst of the worst" repeat DUI offenders with suspended or revoked driver licenses.

......are you worried that your orange tree looks sick? Are your citrus fruits misshapen or discolored? Think your citrus trees might have a disease? This could be caused by the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri), a small, aphid-like insect that feeds on the new flush of citrus and very closely related plants such as orange jasmine. Psyllid feeding causes burned tips and twisting of the new leaves. More importantly, it can spread the bacterium that causes Huanglongbing or "citrus greening" disease.
State agricultural officials are working with City staff to help educate Chula Vista residents who have citrus trees on their properties. To learn more about this citrus disease, please visit www.californiacitrusthreat.org, or call the California Department of Food & Agriculture hotline at (800) 491-1899. |
