Holiday in the Village December 1
A new festival is kicking off the holiday season on Saturday, December 1, in the newly remodeled Village Plaza and throughout downtown Third Avenue. Sponsored by the Third Avenue Village Association (TAVA), the event will replace the annual Starlight Parade this year because of potential safety issues from the on-going construction of the Third Avenue Streetscape Project.
Activities begin at noon and conclude with the annual lighting of Third Avenue at 5 p.m. The festivities include live music, handcrafted gifts, local art, the "ugliest holiday sweater contest," and more. Kids will delight in the guest appearance by 20th Century Fox's "Ice Age" characters, and the San Diego Padres "Swinging Friar" and his "Pad Squad" will help spread cheer.
Strolling musicians will perform throughout the village and SDG&E will conduct their annual LED light exchange in Memorial Park. Classic cars will be on display and Santa Claus will appear in the park for photos at 1:30. Third Avenue merchants will showcase their shops with decorated windows, retail and restaurant specials. For more details, please call TAVA at (619) 422-1982 or CLICK HERE. |
Bayfront Master Plan Receives Award
The Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan has won a prestigious award from the North American Strategic Infrastructure Leadership Forum. The award recognizes the plan's projected impact on job creation and business growth. The master plan for 550 acres on Chula Vista's bayfront received unanimous California Coastal Commission approval in August 2012, and officials are conducting outreach to potential developers and investors.
"This award validates some of our top priorities for the Chula Vista bayfront - creating good jobs and fostering economic development," said Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox. "Experts from across North America have recognized the economic benefits this project will bring to the San Diego region."
The bayfront plan envisions a world-class destination - hotels, homes, shops, restaurants and more than 240 acres of parks and nature preserve. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, transform the bayfront, and generate revenue for public services like police, fire protection and parks. |

Last Chance for Energy Home
The city's first sustainable energy showcase house at 590 Fig Avenue will be holding its last open house on Saturday, November 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The home was sold after ten months of monthly public tours demonstrating home energy upgrades, as well as being a training site and video case study for contractors. During the ten month period:
- There were a total of 386 attendees to each open house; an average of 42 per event
- 103 people, or 27% signed up for energy assessments with participating contractors
- Of those that signed up for energy assessments, 20 households, or around 20% submitted retrofit projects through the Energy Upgrade California program.
Recently, the City partnered with the California Center for Sustainable Energy and San Diego Gas & Electric to create a new Chula Vista Energy Upgrade Demonstration Home. Located at 245 Ash Avenue, this home features energy efficient LED lighting, special windows, a tankless water heater and ENERGY STAR-certified roof and kitchen appliances. Like the Fig Avenue home, it will be open for monthly tours. To learn more, CLICK HERE or call (619) 409-3893. |
Let's Talk Turkey!
Thanksgiving is coming soon and many folks will be deep frying their turkeys. But those fryers hold up to three gallons of cooking oil! So what do you do with all that cooking oil when you are finished? Recycle it!
Old, used cooking oil can be recycled into a variety of products. In Chula Vista it's recycled to biodiesel. Cooking oil that is collected in the City's recycling program is processed by New Leaf Biodiesel and turned into biodiesel that is then used in the City's heavy equipment fleet, including fire trucks.
Single family households may recycle their used cooking oil through Republic Services. Simply place cooled cooking oil in the bottle or container that it came in and replace the lid tightly. Call Republic Services (619) 421-9400 two days before your regular trash service day, and then place the container at the curb by 7 a.m. on your service day for their special truck to collect.
All residents (apartment/condo dwellers and single family households) may also take used cooking oil to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, located at 1800 Maxwell Road, on Wednesdays or Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility can only accept cooking oil from residential users. Oil must be strained to remove large food particles. Cooking oil contaminated with toxic or hazardous material or oil that is stored in a container that held hazardous materials will not be accepted. |
