    McGill Seminar

    Recently, our physical therapists and physical therapist assistants attended a two-day continuing education course "Building the Ultimate Back: From Rehabilitation to Performance" by Dr. Stuart McGill. Dr. McGill has done extensive research in the area of low back pain. The seminar had in-depth demonstrations on exercises to issue to patient's with various back conditions.

    One exercise of focus was the McGill squat.  The squat technique emphasizes abdominal and postural stabilizers to create the most stable spine to prepare for movement.

     

    McGill Squat
    squat

    Stand with feet hips distance apart.
    1) Tighten abdominal muscles in neutral spine.
    2) Bring shoulders down and back into reverse shrug. Squat down and slide hands down thighs gripping hands above knees. Keep elbows locked straight.
    3) Do carpet ripper.
