Timely COBRA Notices are Critical
Providing timely COBRA notices is critical to avoid significant penalties and other liability. COBRA provides penalties of up to $100 per day for violations, and failing to provide timely notice could result in a current or former employee losing health coverage-with the employer possibly being out of pocket for medical expenses after coverage is lost.
Also, please keep in mind that there are qualifying events other than separation from employment, including a reduction in hours worked. These events may trigger the requirement to provide notice and are more easily overlooked than an employment termination.

EEOC Is Investigating Systemic Discrimination More Aggressively
When defending against a charge filed with the EEOC, employers should be aware that the Commission will not just investigate an individual's charge. The Commission also has stepped up its efforts to look for evidence of systemic discrimination that affects multiple employees.
Be careful and seek the advice of counsel before submitting position statements or responding to requests for information from the Commission. Even details that appear innocuous can trigger an investigation beyond the scope of the original charge.

Letter From The President
|

Dear Michiana SHRM Members,
It is hard to believe we are entering into the 4th quarter of 2014. We have had an exciting year so far and an amazing fourth quarter planned. To start, it is not too late to register for our Chapter's Annual Conference on October 16, which is the second largest conference in the state of Indiana, and listen to a National Speaker, Andy Masters. Andy will be presenting two very valuable topics: one at the Leadership Forum on Wednesday night and the key note on Thursday at the conference. We will also be holding a Diversity Job Fair in October. Then in November we will be looking at the Road Map of HR and December a Legal Update looking back at 2014. As a preview of topics to come, we have requested SHRM National to come and speak in 2015 on the certification changes.
As with any organization, we exist to serve our members and to enhance professional development, education, and networking to those involved in the Human Resources professional in Michiana. Michiana is fortunate to have great volunteers who work hard all year to oversee, design, develop, and implement the programming, networking, and community service activities. As President, I want to recognize this tremendous volunteer effort and also those Board members who will be completing their commitment on the Board as a volunteer in December. We are at this time looking for a few 2015 Board Members to help lead these great programs and events we hold each year for the membership. If you are interested or even just want to learn more about what the board does please contact either me or Eileen Shue, President Elect. To better serve our members and to offer comprehensive programming, our Chapter is continuing to support other local professional organizations like Michiana Human Resource Association which meets in Elkhart, and Leader Legacy. Michiana SHRM wants to enhance the member's value proposition by providing coordinated opportunities for our members to expand their knowledge and build solid relationships with similarly interested peers through online knowledge sharing, in-person and virtual social interactions, and targeted learning activities. Stay tuned as this evolves over the next year as we expand our membership levels in 2015.

Diversity is Useless Without Inclusivity
by Christine M. Riordan | 12:00 PM June 5, 2014
Over the past decade, organizations have worked hard to create diversity within their workforce. Diversity can bring many organizational benefits, including greater customer satisfaction, better market position, successful decision-making, an enhanced ability to reach strategic goals, improved organizational outcomes, and a stronger bottom line.
However, while many organizations are better about creating diversity, many have not yet figured out how to make the environment inclusive-that is, create an atmosphere in which all people feel valued and respected and have access to the same opportunities.
That's a problem.
For Christine's solutions, read the rest of her insightful article at...http://blogs.hbr.org/2014/06/diversity-is-useless-without-inclusivity/
